BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: Bloodline by Kathi Oram Peterson

ABOUT THE BOOK

France, 1371. The old Queen of France lies on her deathbed with a secret she will take to her grave: there is one true heir to the throne, one who would have the power to ally France and Scotland. But after her death, all that will be left are a few shreds of evidence revealing the stunning identity of her successor.

Flight attendant Skye Armstrong has heard the voice of warning before, and as she's returning home from London, she recognizes the feeling of dread that accompanies her sixth sense. Walking from the airport terminal to her car, she pauses in the middle of the road. Her hesitation gives a Good Samaritan the split second he needs to pull her out of the path of a speeding car, saving her life. But her misfortunes are just beginning. When she arrives home, she discovers that Auntie Marjorie has been kidnapped, and cryptic instructions have been left behind: Skye must retrieve the contents of a safe deposit box and deliver it to the captors . . .No police. Her feelings of dread return.

What Skye discovers in the bank box is baffling: a single page. The ancient document is certainly valuable, and with no time to lose, she goes to the rendezvous to discover the next step. A cell phone rings beneath a park bench. She answers the call, and on the screen is a picture of Auntie, unconscious. Now the kidnapper demands Skye find two more pages or her aunt will die.
What secrets are hidden within the illuminated pages, and who believes they are worth killing for? And what roles does the Good Samaritan play in all of it?

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: The Search by Clair Poulson

ABOUT THE BOOK

Young private investigator Jayden Spaulding has cracked his share of tough cases, but nothing like this one.

When stunning professional basketball player Nadia Fairchild walks through his door, her story seems simple enough: two days ago, her mother disappeared along with a member of the women’s college basketball team she coached. Jayden and Nadia delve into a baffling maze of motive and opportunity with a lengthy list of possible suspects.

As they work together amid their growing attraction to one another, the unlikely duo seems no closer to discovering the truth. Then the threats begin. Soon, the pair begins to suspect that this case is much more complicated than a simple disappearance—they have unwittingly stumbled on a conspiracy of corruption, greed, and murder far more deadly than they ever imagined.

Others are also searching for the missing women, and they will eliminate anyone who stands in their way . . .

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: One Fell Down by Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen

ABOUT THE BOOK

When Mikaela York opens an anonymous blue sympathy card with the nursery rhyme "Jack and Jill" written inside, she doesn't know what to make of it. But soon after, Mikaela and her fiance are in a tragic car accident, resulting in her husband-to-be's death. Then when Mikaela's grandmother loses her life in a hiking accident one year later, an old man gives Mikaela another mysterious blue card at the funeral.

After the service, Mikaela's grandfather asks that she oversee the renovations on his bed & breakfast in New Zealand. When she arrives, Mikaela meets Tui Davies—the inn's manager—and Brentin Williams, the man Tui expects her daughter to marry. Tui helps Mikaela retrieve a doll from the cellar vault, but the doll turns out to be an evil omen that Mikaela is told she must get rid of before someone is murdered.

Meanwhile, the old man from the funeral is bent on revenge and is plotting against everyone who has ever wronged him, and Mikaela is next in line. But until she discovers the killer's contact in New Zealand, who can she trust? And while Brentin attempts to help Mikaela overcome her grief, she must decide—is she ready to love again?

REVIEW

A great location? Check.  Interesting cultural mystery? Check. Sympathetic characters? Check.  This book has all three of those things.  The fact that a good chunk of the story takes place in a country I've long wanted to see certainly didn't hurt anything, neither did the cultural aspects of the story.  Of course, ultimately the murderer(s) are responsible for the choices they make no matter their beliefs, but it added an interesting note to the story.  Mikaela is a sympathetic character from the beginning since she loses her fiance and grandmother in the first three chapters.  And naturally she's not eager to fall in love again.  An interesting read for those who love romance with their suspense.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: Breach of Trust by Kathi Oram Peterson

ABOUT THE BOOK

Lieutenant Commander Cooper Lane has so much to live for. With a loving husband and beautiful baby girl waiting for her back home, she is anxious to finish her mission in Afghanistan and return to her family. But in a split second, her world shatters. Her helicopter is going down in that hostile country, and there will be no survivors.

Four years later ...

On a covert mission in an Afghan village, Navy SEAL Axe Talbot finds something no one ever expected: Lieutenant Cooper Lane—alive. Cooper survived the crash that killed her team and has been hiding behind enemy lines for four years. It's the woman he's been looking for and dreaming about for so long.

After her rescue, Cooper is not sure she can survive the reality waiting for her back home—when she disappeared and was pronounced dead, her husband married her best friend. Cooper is lost, but her troubles are just beginning. in one horror-filled moment, her former husband is murdered before her eyes, and Cooper becomes the prime suspect. Now she must embark on one last mission to clear her name. And there are only two people she trusts to help her: her father and Axe, the SEAL who rescued her. Cooper and Axe take off, and together the makeshift team uncovers a trail of mysterious deaths that leads to unimaginable danger.

REVIEW

This book works as suspense on so many levels.  Cooper makes a great sympathetic main character as she starts the story having survived so much already.  Getting shot down in her helicopter, hiding for four years, barely getting rescued, and now she's being framed for murder.  But she's got her father and a Navy SEAL on her side, as well as the determination to prove herself innocent so she can see the daughter she hasn't seen in four years.  Working together in the brief time they have together, it soon becomes apparent that there is a conspiracy at play and if the;y don't get to the bottom of it, both Cooper and Axe could pay with their lives.  Peterson has done a nice job creating an interesting scenario with both great characters and obstacles galore.  I enjoyed reading the story and how Cooper and Axe fall in love along the way.  It's clear the author worked hard to get the military and other details right, which I always appreciate as it makes the book more believable.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: Witness in the Dark by Lynne Larson

ABOUT THE BOOK

What began as a picture-perfect summer vacation for college student Jenny Brodie has swiftly become a nightmare. When she left home on the back of her horse one sunny morning, she couldn't have imagined what awaited her in the Utah desert. Now the darkness is closing in, and there is no way out.

The woman saw what he did—she witnessed the shots he fired, the murder he committed. But she'll never talk. He's made sure of that.

For a man desperate to hide his crimes, the pressure steadily rises as Jenny's community bands together to find the missing young woman. As the searchers grow ever closer to discovering what he has hidden, so too does his desperation. he will stop at nothing to keep the woman hidden—but he has underestimated the second witness to his evil deeds: a young girl determined to protect Jenny. As the trail runs cold, will help come for Jenny before time runs out?

REVIEW

After Jen Brodie rides out to visit a troubled little girl, she gets more than she bargained for when she witnesses the girl's father murder someone.  When's she's caught trying to escape and tossed into an old mine, her only hope is that little girl who happens to be mute.  Can Jen's family and friends find her before it's too late?  Can she hang on that long?  The story is told through flashbacks at the beginning as Jen reflects on how she ended up in her current situation.  The story then shifts to Jen's family and friends as they search desperately for her.  This is an interesting read when just enough suspense to keep you turning the pages.  I didn't get as involved with the characters as maybe I would have liked, but it was still a nice read.  I found it interesting to follow along as the sheriff and others do everything in their power to locate Jen while all the time a young, neglected young girl holds all the answers.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: Infected by Gregg Luke

ABOUT THE BOOK

Mother Nature: the world's most innovative killer.

Deep in the jungles of Venezuela, mycologist Dr. Julia Fatheringham is engrossed in her study of native fungi. But what begins as a standard research trip quickly spirals into chaos when her associate's erratic behavior results in his horrifying death. Soon, Julia makes a startling discover: her partner was contaminated by an organism found only in insects. It alters the victim's mind in alarming ways, with an invariably deadly outcome. Julia is baffled by her discovery—this organism has never appeared in humans. It shouldn't be possible. There is only one terrifying conclusion: The infection has jumped species.

Now, in this remote corner of the world, a contagion of unparalleled horror rests in Julia's hands. But even as she works to contain the organism that could spell devastation of apocalyptic proportions, there are others with a different agenda. They've learned of her discovery and will go to any lengths to acquire a sample—there is good money to be had in eco-terrorism.

Armed only with her strength of mind and what courage she can gather, Julia prepares to battle the devastating scourge—and the terrorists determined to unleash it on humanity.

REVIEW

Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to finish this book yet.  But I'm liking what I've read so far.  I do have a tendency to enjoy books set in unusual settings and the Venezuelan rain forest qualifies.  And medical thrillers also appeal to me, so once again, I'm disposed to like this book.  I do like what I've read so far.  I'm say more once I've finished the book.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: Undercover Target by Frank Holdaway

ABOUT THE BOOK

When Matt Knight left his career as a spy to marry the woman of his dreams, he thought he was in for a life of domestic bliss. But after adopting a baby girl and her teenage brother from China, he finds that being a father comes with its own set of challenges—problems for which his work as an antiterrorism agent did nothing to prepare him. Or so he thought. When a Scout campout with his teenage son takes a terrifying turn, Matt realizes his past and present have just collided, with devastating consequences.

Deep in the rugged mountains of Utah, a band of mercenaries lies in wait. The target: Matt Knight. Their orders come from a dangerous enemy from the former agent's past, one who is bent on destroying everything Matt holds dear. While struggling to protect his son and the other Scouts, Matt is horrified to learn the full extent of the plan: his wife and baby have been taken too. Now the agent-turned-family-man must draw on his years of combat training in an explosive battle to save those he loves—or die trying.

REVIEW

I'm impressed with both the quality of the writing and the plotting in Undercover Target.  Frank Holdaway pulls the read into the story right away as the reader meets Matt and Hope through the eyes of Peng, a young Chinese orphan who is spying on them as they adopt his little sister, Jin.  He does not expect them to take him too, but they do.  But Peng has his own set of baggage that creates barriers between him and his new family.  On top of that but Matt is about to discover that his past as an anti-terrorism agent is about to come back to bite him.  I was pulled into the story immediately, despite not having read the first book Undercover Saint. It was clear I had missed Matt and Hope's romance, but that didn't really slow me down in enjoying this book.  It was awesome to read about Matt's friends and colleagues as well.  Holdaway has written an action-packed, but rather thoughtful look at foreign adoption as well as the dangers of undercover work.

BLOG TOUR with GIVEAWAY: Portrait of Lies by Clair M. Poulson

ABOUT THE BOOK

It was a robbery gone bad, or so they said. For Detective Trey Shotwell, the murder of his mother, a prominent artist, was the catalyst for setting aside his own artistic aspirations to pursue a career in law enforcement—despite the opposition of his father, also a famous painter. When he agrees to attend an art auction featuring his father’s work, the cruise ship locale provides the relaxation Trey needs. And when he meets stunning fellow passenger Aariah Stanton, the undeniable chemistry they share is an unexpected bonus.

But the tranquil voyage quickly turns into a nightmare at sea. The Shotwell paintings have disappeared, and amidst the chaotic hunt for the thief, a murderer is free to roam the halls of the ship. Aariah finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and miraculously escapes the murderer—for now. But another victim is not so lucky . . .

The crime is eerily reminiscent of the death of Trey’s mother so many years before. But this time, the young detective has the resources he needs to track the killer. As the pieces of the puzzle begin to come together, they paint the chilling picture of a sinister plot years in the making. In a manhunt that takes him from the high seas of the Pacific to the wilderness of Australia, Trey will stop at nothing to solve the crime and protect the woman he loves.

REVIEW

Poulson has provided another interesting murder mystery involving cruise ships, fabulous paintings, and obsession.  I confess I enjoy murder mysteries, not because of the violence, but the way the mystery is solved.  In this one, Detective Inspector Trey Shotwell is ten years past the murder of his mother but he has never forgotten what happened and is still determined to find out who killed her.  The sudden reappearance of an altered version of one of his mother's last paintings that was stolen during her murder changes everything.  But additional violence and another theft complicate things as does the appearance of a pretty young American frightened of the men in the room next to her.  Once again Poulson demonstrates his law enforcement experience as he shepherds us through the story.

BLOG TOUR: Quantum Breach by Denver Acey

ABOUT THE BOOK

Tanner Zane is a Mormon with a secret criminal past. Nobody suspects that, before his religious conversion, Tanner hacked into thousands of computer networks across the globe. He accumulated millions of dollars from his illegal activities until a sudden, life-changing event caused him to abandon hacking and give his fortune to charity. But Tanner’s guarded past is exposed when he is kidnapped by his mysterious neighbor and forced to hack into an impossible target – Los Alamos National Labs. Inside the government facility is a prototype quantum computer that is powerful enough to crack the digital safeguards of the Internet. When Tanner learns that cyber-terrorists will use the quantum computer to commit massive identify theft and corporate espionage around the world, he deliberately engages in an intellectual battle with his captors to prevent them from obtaining the device.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Few people understand the terrifying, yet realistic threat of computer hacking like Denver Acey. Denver has spent his entire professional career in the information technology industry where he has witnessed and even thwarted actual cybercrime. From his top-secret job working for the US government to securing computer networks at Fortune 500 companies, Denver is personally familiar with hackers and their unscrupulous activities.

But over the years, Denver has become increasingly frustrated with Hollywood's inaccurate portrayal of cybercrime. Hackers are more intelligent and more sophisticated than simple teenagers, who guzzle down Mountain Dew while playing video games. Cybercrime is a billion-dollar business that encompasses organized crime and foreign governments. For these elite hackers, the fruits of success are iconic trademarks, innovative patents, and government secrets.

Because of his unique background, Denver decided to write a book to dispel hacking myths while highlighting the tenacity of cybercriminals. Utilizing actual computer hacking concepts and scenarios that he has experienced firsthand, Denver illustrates  -- in a simple way for even the non-techie to understand -- how vulnerable we all are to cybercrime.

REVIEW

I haven't actually finished this book yet, but hope to do so in the next couple of days.  I do like what I've read so far and the topic interests me greatly.
