BLOG TOUR: I Can Love LIke Jesus by Heidi Poelman

ABOUT THE BOOK

Help your little ones live and love like Jesus did with this adorable picture book. The simple text and beautiful illustrations show children exactly how Jesus loved others and how to emulate Him with small acts of kindness, like sharing, forgiving, and comforting. Invite the Savior into your home and feel His peace each time you read this book together.

REVIEW

This adorable book shows how we as followers of Jesus Christ can be more like him. Each two page spread shares one way that Jesus showed love to his followers and the people around him.  Jesus helped create the earth, taught those willing to listen, healed the sick, and sacrificed His life for all humankind.  The illustrations take the concept of following Christ's example a step further by showing ways to demonstrate that love by helping those around us.  Each illustration shows a child showing love as well as a small reference to the event in Christ's life that is being referenced.  This book provides a sweet way to help children understand just what it means to be like Jesus.

A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF CHRISTMAS MATERIALS!

Inline image 2All About Christmas

This hard cover book is stuffed with stories, songs, poems, Christmas history, joyful traditions, recipes, and activities. This delightful book celebrates all things Christmas - from the sacred story of the Nativity to the lore of Saint Nick.

This is an amazing collection of materials, including stories, recipes and old-fashioned illustrations that made me nostalgic for the less commercialized aspects of Christmas. It reminded me of what Christmas is all about, spending time with family and remembering our Savior Jesus Christ. See here for a more thorough review.

Inline image 3Words of Christmas: Savoring the True Meaning of the Season One Word at a Time

This beautifully designed book takes a closer look at twenty-five words, like hope, faith and joy, that we hear throughout the holidays.

So much attention is paid to the Christmas holiday that I sometimes think that the most important parts get neglected. This book focuses on twenty-five words that convey most beautifully exactly what the Christmas holiday is all about. A powerful reminder of the power of words to both lighten and darken the world.

Inline image 4Christus Marble 3 inch statue

This statue is small but the reminder of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is a powerful one. This is a replica of one of my all time favorite pieces of art. I placed it next to my nativity as a symbol of what that baby in the manger grew up to be and do do. A wonderful addition to my Christmas decorations, I will cherish using this not only at Christmas but all year round.

Inline image 7A Songbook for LDS Families

A Songbook for LDS Families highlights eighteen beloved and well-known songs, as well as twenty-eight newly penned Book of Mormon hymns composed by Janice Kapp Perry with text by Bonnie Hart Murray.

Looking through this songbook brought back many happy memories of my childhood. The first section of the book contains 18 of the best known of Janice Kapp Perry's beautiful songs.  I remember loving many of these as a child and the beautiful messages and melodies contained therein.  I enjoyed reading the stories surrounding their creation.  The second half of the book contains 28 new songs based on well-known Book of Mormon stories and testimonies.  While these are unfamiliar the words are beautiful and I look forward to learning them.  The gorgeous paintings and stories connected to these songs make them all the more inspiring.

Inline image 6No Ordinary Shepherd (DVD)

The young shepard boy, has always treasured his father's tale of that starlit night filled with wonder of angelic heralds and a tiny Bethlehem stable sheltering the chosen Messiah. The young shepard later encounters a miracle of his own.

While this is not a high cost production with big name actors and on location shooting, to me what matters is the story. And the story is a sweet story of faith and healing. I also really liked the actor portraying the Savior, his gentle and kind demeanor reflects just how I think the Savior would have acted. A sweet portrayal that had me crying in the end.

Inline image 8He Knows My Name (DVD)

Rebekah is fascinated by the man her neighbors call Jesus. Her mother is not so sure. One day she brings Jesus home - a simple act that will forever change their lives.

All I can say about this one is that you need to see it.  I absolutely loved it, although it did make me cry.  I'm not sure I can even put into words what this one made me feel, all I can say is watch it!

MANY THANKS TO THE PUBLISHER FOR SENDING THESE MATERIALS WHICH HAVE ADDED GREATLY TO MY ENJOYMENT OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON!

LDS NONFICTION: The Miracles of Jesus by Eric D. Huntsman

ABOUT THE BOOK

Foreseen by prophets before Jesus' birth, witnesses by many during his life, and read about by millions since, the miracles of Jesus are a distinguishing aspect of his mortal ministry.

Both then and now, these miracles are powerful witnesses that Jesus is the Christ, God's anointed servant and the Savior of mankind. He performed many miracles ranging from feeding multitudes to giving sight to the blind and restoring life and health to the infirm.

But these miracles were more than just blessings to the individuals involved. Each one contains symbols that teach us about Jesus, his atonement, and the greater miracles that he can work in the lives of all of us.

In The Miracles of Jesus, author Eric D. Huntsman blends perceptive doctrinal insights with historical context, literary analysis, and specific personal application. His exploration of the meaning and symbolism of each of the Savior's miracles shows us how they can bless us in the challenges we ourselves face today. Here, for example, he draws connections between the devils the Savior cast out and the demons we or loved ones may face in overcoming addiction or recovering from abuse. And we see in a new way how the promise inherent in Christ's raising of Lazarus and the daughter of Jairus can comfort us at the death of someone we love.

Fine-art paintings and musical meditations enhance our experience by illustrating Jesus' miracles and their power. Photographs of sites in the Holy Land where many of the miracles were performed give us a sense of place, reinforcing the fact that they really happened.

Through these inspirational means, we find that the miracles Jesus performed in New Testament times can become a springboard to the miracles that continue to occur in our own lives—transformations made possible through the Atonement of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

“Huntsman knows his way around the library when it comes to the New Testament. He speaks authoritatively about Greek and Latin roots, he has a clear grasp of both textual and historical criticism. The result is a compelling book that is equal parts devotional and scholarly. There is much that will challenge us intellectually and invite us to read deeply. All of the miracles point directly to the greatest miracle of all: Christ’s Atonement, with its victory over both spiritual and physical decay.” - Michael Austin

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

ERIC D. HUNTSMAN is an associate professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University, where he serves as the coordinator of the Ancient Near Eastern Studies program in the Kennedy Center for International Studies and is affiliated with the Classics program. After graduating from BYU in classical Greek and Latin, he earned a Ph.D. in ancient history from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the BYU faculty in 1994.

The author of the acclaimed God So Loved the World: The Final Days of the Savior’s Life and Good Tidings of Great Joy: An Advent Celebration of the Savior’s Birth, both from Deseret Book, Dr. Huntsman has also published numerous articles on the New Testament and the writings of John.

He served as a full-time missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and as a bishop in Provo, Utah. Brother Huntsman is an ordinance worker in the Provo Utah Temple and sings in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He and his wife, Elaine Scott Huntsman, are the parents of two children.

REVIEW

Some of the most powerful accounts in all scripture revolve around the miracles Jesus performed during his mortal life.  Huntsman looks at these accounts not only as the incredible moments that they were but also the power symbolism that they involve.  Using explanations of ancient language, gorgeous artwork, interesting sidebars, as well as musical references, the reader is taken on a journey through Christ's life and what it can all mean in our own lives today.

One of the things that Huntsman mentions that I found very interesting is how many people see what Christ did in terms of healing the sick or commanding the elements as 'unnatural' or 'supernatural'. He points out that since Christ is the Creator, nothing he did was unnatural.  He also suggests that there are many laws that we simply may not be aware of yet.  And I strongly believe he is correct.

The overall impression I got of this book was that the miracles that Jesus performed all come together to do one thing and that is identify Christ as the divine being that he was and is still.  His miracles were not intended to be signs but witnesses to those already willing to believe.  Such miracles are not limited to Christ's mortal life, He is still more than willing to offer miracles to us, but we have to exercise the faith necessary to accept what he offers, even when it isn't what we originally wanted.

BLOG TOUR: Peace, Be Still by David S. Baxter

Peace Be Still blog tour

18123147ABOUT THE BOOK

“No waters can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean and earth and skies.
They all shall sweetly obey thy will:
Peace, be still; peace, be still.”
(Hymns, “Master, the Tempest is Raging,” no. 105.)

Our modern world is full of fast-paced stress and jam-packed schedules. Both trials and blessings happen to us so quickly that there is rarely a moment of peace. It is easy to be overwhelmed and lost.

In Peace, Be Still, Elder David S. Baxter of the Seventy describes ways for us to find peace in our crazy world by turning to our Lord, Jesus Christ. He speaks of principles to learn, habits to gain, and places to go to find peace in our daily lives and at home. This inspiring book will help us through the tempests in our lives and lead us to a greater sense of personal peace by encouraging and instructing us to follow Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

David Baxter was born in Stirling, Scotland, and became a General Authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2006. He previously worked in senior leadership roles in the telecommunications industry and on the boards of various UK Government agencies, and he holds a BSc degree in economics. In his Church service he has been a bishop, a stake president, a member of a mission presidency, and an Area Seventy. He has served in Church area presidencies in Europe and the Pacific. He and his wife, Dianne, are the parents of four children and nine grandchildren. He is the author of A Perfect Brightness of Hope.

REVIEW

A sweet book about finding peace in a busy and confusing world.  I especially appreciated the emphasis on receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost can provide direction, revelation, comfort, and peace when sought worthily. A good book for me to read since I get so easily stressed by the business of life. Elder Baxter talks about things that remove peace from our lives and where and how we can find it again.  He talks about death, repentance and forgiveness, places to find peace (like the temple), changing perspectives and attitudes, and enjoying the love of Christ. A great book for those like me who need to be reminded that peace can be found amidst the challenges and difficulties that surround us. Highly recommended.

REVIEW: One Drop at a Time by M. Russell Ballard

ONE DROP AT A TIME
A Message for Women
by M. Russell Ballard
Deseret Book, 2013
ISBN: 978-1-60907-522-4
LDS Nonfiction/Inspirational
Review copy provided by publisher in return for honest review.
All opinions expressed are solely my own.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Do you sometimes wonder if your little efforts could possibly make any difference at all? Consider a simple example from nature.

Honey is “one of the foods that includes all the substances— enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and water—necessary to sustain life,” writes Elder M. Russell Ballard. And yet, “Over its short lifetime of just a few weeks to four months, a single honeybee’s contribution of honey to its hive is a mere one-twelfth of one teaspoon. Though seemingly insignificant when compared to the total, each bee’s one-twelfth of a teaspoon of honey is vital to the life of the hive.”

Your simple, daily acts of service matter, and this charmingly illustrated little book will lift your heart as it demonstrates the power of many righteous people working together to fill the world, one drop at a time, with the sweet truths of the gospel.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Elder M. Russell Ballard was sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in October 1985. Prior to that, he served in the first Quorum of the Seventy and in the presidency of that quorum. A successful businessman, he has engaged in various enterprises, including automotive, real estate, and investments. He has also served as a bishop twice and as president of the Canada Toronto Mission. Elder Ballard and his wife, Barbara Bowen Ballard, are the parents of seven children and grandparents of forty-three. (Deseret Book website)

REVIEW

A beautifully-illustrated book that is full of wisdom and counsel. This book would make a great gift for any woman who struggles to feel like her efforts to make a difference mean anything. Elder Ballard points out that just as each honeybee contributes to the whole each woman's efforts to serve are invaluable and priceless. While those efforts seem small and puny, in the end many lives can be touched by the service rendered by a righteous woman, whether at home, work, or in the community.  I have seen this often in my own life. I have been blessed to have many such women in my life and my life is the richer for it.

Elder Ballard goes on to point out that the best way to make a difference is to pray and look for opportunities to serve those around us.  He recommends that as women we fill our hearts with the gospel of Christ and extend that faith, hope, and charity to those around us. Many lives will be changed and uplifted if we do so.  A short book to be sure, but the message is priceless. Highly recommended.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lacey West, a wife, mother, and registered nurse, was born and raised in Delta, Utah.  She graduated with honors from Southern Utah University with a Bachelor degree in Nursing.  Motivated by a desire to conquer her own depression, she spent years researching mental health.  She enjoys writing, spending time with family, playing the violin, sewing, and fishing.  She resides with her husband and two children in Wichita, Kansas. To find out more on Living in the Light and author Lacey West, visit: www.laceyawest.com.

REVIEW

Mental illness is a complex and often misunderstood topic. Unlike most diseases which manifest themselves physically, mental illness is primarily internal.  Also, symptoms of mental illness can often be similar to those of other diseases.  Causes and effects are difficult to determine. In this book, the authors look at depression as the disease it is and talk about some of the current theories and beliefs about it as well as their own experiences with it.  West shares some of her own experiences with the disease and the things that have helped her, including her religious beliefs.  I especially liked her focus on learning to focus one's thoughts on the positive rather than the negative.  Thoughts are such a powerful thing.  I appreciated the focus on taking action to help oneself or a loved one.  With mental illness, it is easy to feel helpless as well as hopeless.

This is a wonderful book for those looking for light in darkness, but it is no substitute for medical treatment or for the scriptures for that matter. But for those looking for more insight into depression, what it is, and some personal thoughts and experiences as well as comfort should definitely take a look at this book.

REVIEW

I've spent some time thinking about just how to express my feelings about this book.  It had a huge emotional impact, which is remarkable for a story of just 60 pages.  I don't usually expect this kind of depth from such a short story. It undoubtedly comes from my own personal feelings about Jesus Christ.  As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons), I have a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and His standing as the Son of God.  At it's heart that is what this book is about, the life and healing that Jesus Christ brings.

Jeremy is a young boy struggling with the fact that due to a car accident he must live in a wheel chair rather than enjoying the snow like the other children. On Christmas Eve, after his family has read the Nativity Story, he goes to bed struggling with his bitterness and much doubt about whether Jesus really exists.  That night he has a dream where some of those whose lives were touched by the Savior testify of Him.  Each testimony is born through a song (the music is included on a CD or you may listen to it at the CD slideshow link above). The back of the book includes the music for each song. I found the songs particularly moving and powerful. Combine the music and the story and you have a very touching and powerful story about the healing that can come through faith in Jesus Christ perfect for sharing during the upcoming holiday seasons and for years to come.

For those who might be interested in learning more about Mormon beliefs, feel free to contact me or check out mormon.org.
