A PROPER ROMANCE: The Bachelor and the Bride by Sarah M. Eden

The Bachelor and the Bride

ABOUT THE BOOK

London, 1866

Dr. Barnabus Milligan has always felt called to help people, whether that means setting a broken bone or rescuing the impoverished women of London from their desperate lives on the streets as part of his work with the Dread Penny Society.

Three years ago, he helped rescue Gemma Kincaid by secretly marrying her to protect her from her family of notorious grave robbers.

But six months after Gemma and Barnabus exchanged vows, she realized her love for her new husband was unrequited. To protect her heart, she left, telling Barnabus to contact her if his feelings for her ever grew beyond a sense of duty.

When Barnabus sends a letter to Gemma inviting her to return home, she hopes to find a true connection between them. But unfortunately, he only wants her help to foil the Kincaids, who have been terrorizing the boroughs of London, eager to gain both money and power.

Heartbroken, Gemma agrees to help, but she warns Barnabus that she will not stay for long, and once she goes, he'll never see her again.

Yet as the couple follows the clues that seem to connect the Kincaids to the Mastiff, the leader of London's criminal network, Gemma and Barnabus realize they might make a better match than either of them suspected. Perhaps the marriage that had once saved Gemma's life might now save Barnabus―and his lonely heart.

But before the once-confirmed bachelor can properly court his secret bride, they'll need to evade the dangerous forces that are drawing ever closer to the hopeful lovers and the entire Dread Penny Society itself.

REVIEW

The fourth book in The Dread Penny Society series find the society sinking deeper and deeper into trouble. As the society seeks to learn more about the Mastiff and his crew and their awful plans for the city, Dr. Barnabus Milligan faces a dilemma of his own. A secret marriage comes to light, bringing the woman he tried to save back into his life. Gemma left after discovering he didn't love her the way she loved him. But now, her life is at grave risk as her family of resurrectionists tries to bring her back into the fold of their criminal activity which seems to be connected to both the Mastiff and the Dread Penny Society. Integrated into the story are two penny dreadfuls 'written' by Dr. Milligan and 'Mr. King' another of the members of the Dread Penny Society. In this series, the fascinating way the penny dreadfuls intertwine with the main storyline, keeps one turning the pages. And this fourth book in a five book series builds the tension to a crescendo. By the time the book ends, the society is facing it's demise and a disaster than anything they could imagine. A couple of interesting twists at the end definitely surprised me and sent the story into a rather unusual direction. I love the way that the author blends her characters, setting, and stories (including the penny dreadful tales) until they are all part of one connected whole.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Wedding bells are finally ringing for Jacklyn “Jack” Wyatt and her FBI-agent fiancĂ©, Damon Wade. After their adventurous beginning, the happy couple finds the relative calm leading up to their big day a huge relief. Unfortunately, it seems the peace and quiet were too good to last. Now, Jack has no choice but to work with her new husband to unravel the truth before their happily ever after—and their lives—are ended all too soon.

REVIEW

Jack and Damon are back in this action-packed third book.  Jack and Damon are finally getting married, but as one might expect who has read about these two in the previous two books, things do not go smoothly either before the wedding or after.  Once the wedding is over and the two have left on their honeymoon things will calm down.  But from the first moment of the honeymoon, Jack senses that something isn't right, that their is something that Damon isn't telling her.  And it turns out that she is correct.  Once again she finds herself smack dab in the middle of an FBI investigation, but this time its her husband who put her there, which does not make her happy.  But Jack can't help wanting to help solve the case and it puts her in danger.  As the stakes get higher, Jack and Damon have to get past their marital frustrations or they may find their lives are forfeit.  As in the other books in the series, Jack is quite amusing and her relationship with Damon is sweet and realistic.

REGENCY ROMANCE: Promises and Primroses by Josi S. Kilpack

ABOUT THE BOOK

Lord Elliott Mayfield has done his best to take care of his family, first his siblings and now his nieces and nephews. Unfortunately, he sees this new generation moving in the same direction of bad matches and scandalous relationships as the last. In hopes to change their course, he establishes a "marriage campaign" to motivate them to improve themselves through making respectable matches. With his heart in the right place, what could possibly go wrong?

Peter, Elliott's eldest nephew, thinks the entire idea is ridiculous. A widower with two young daughters, he simply needs a governess, not a wife. Julia Hollingsworth certainly has the credentials and the experience, but is altogether too young and pretty for such a job. So why can't he stop thinking about her?

Julia loves working as a governess, despite the objections of her mother, Amelia. And as it turns out, Amelia has a lot to say about the Mayfield men—none of it good. But Julia dismisses the rumors of ruined reputations and instead concentrates on helping Peter with his children and his fledgling business in canine husbandry. His kindness and gentleness is endearing—and increasingly attractive.
But Amelia, whose heart was broken thirty years ago by none other than Elliott Mayfield, is determined to prevent any relationship from blooming either between Peter and Julia—or between herself and Elliott.

Hearts and history collide as both couples must face their pasts and decide if risking it all is worth the promise of new love and a new future.

REVIEW

Josi Kilpack has a gift for writing books with a lot of heart.  In this story of 'promises and primroses', the two main characters have no intention of falling in love when they meet.  Peter Mayfield just needs a governess for his two daughters.  And Julia desperately wants a chance to make her own decisions about her future.  When they meet at a job interview, Peter is surprised by the attraction he feels to Julia.  As a result he doesn't hire her.  But after his other options don't work out, he seeks her out of necessity.  When Peter discovers that Julia happens to share his passion for dogs, his attraction to her continues to grow.  But as things continue to develop between them, circumstances beyond their control impact their changing feelings.  Peter's Uncle Elliott has come up with a scheme to fix his families' reputation and it involves encouraging his nieces and nephews to marry well and rewarding them accordingly.  Peter wants nothing to do with it, but his Uncle is determined to see his Peter happily remarried regardless.  In addition, it turns out that Julia's mother and Peter's uncle used to court thirty years ago, and Julia's mother, Amelia, still maintains bitter feelings about it.  Amelia has no intention of allowing her daughter to work for, let alone fall in love with a Mayfield.  With Uncle Elliott's and Amelia's interference getting in the way, will Peter and Julia find a way to make their relationship work?  I enjoyed this book immensely.  The book read easily as all Kilpack's books do.  And her characters, even when doing unlikable things, still manage to be sympathetic and believable.

BLOG TOUR: The Heart of Thornewell by Anita Stansfield

ABOUT THE BOOK

What should have been a grand adventure in Africa ends in heartbreak for Enid Hawthorne, following her husband's untimely death. Bereft, the young widow bravely boards a ship for home with precious cargo—her unborn child. She hopes to find refuge in England in the only place she can—Thornewell Hall, the estate of her late husband's family. But upon her arrival, she finds a bleak home in the depths of mourning. It is clear that hers is not the only tragedy, but Enid is unprepared for the hostility that meets her arrival.

Sebastian, Earl of Thornewell, is grief-stricken following the loss of his wife and child. The news that his brother is dead is simply more than he can take—and he knows who is to blame: his sister-in-law, Enid. So when she arrives on his doorstep, seeking asylum, he does his duty in allowing her to stay—and nothing more. Yet fate has other plans, and as they face joys and trials alongside each other, their broken hearts begin to heal. But there is a cloud over their future, for Enid harbors a secret that may drive them apart forever.

REVIEW

Anita Stansfield has a gift for writing stories full of emotion.  The characters in this book certainly experience a wide range of emotions.  Enid Hawthorne is a young, pregnant missionary's wife who has just lost her husband to disease.  But she has no time to grieve as she must make her way back to England from Africa.  She's not sure her husband's brother, the Earl of Thornewell will welcome her, he didn't like her before, but she has no where else to go as her own family disowned her years before.  But she isn't prepared for what she finds.  Thornewell is full of grief as well as the mistress died after childbirth just a few months earlier.

But grief is just the beginning of the roller coaster of emotions that both Enid and Sebastian, the Earl of Thornewell experience as they both struggle to cope with the loss of their spouses.  There is blame and anger and confusion.  Neither intended to fall in love with the other but they can't help themselves, but Sebastian's stubborn determination to blame Enid for his brother's death (without hearing about what happened) puts a wall between them that may not be climbable.

I enjoyed reading this, but frankly there were a number of occasions when I seriously wanted to let Sebastian have it because he was being so unfair and unkind to Enid.  I cheered Enid on when she stood up for herself and refused to let Sebastian get away with his behavior.  Stansfield has written another tender love story that takes both the characters and the reader on a journey through the challenges of life.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: For Castle and Crown by Sian Ann Bessey

ABOUT THE BOOK

But far from a joyful reunion, what awaits his is devastation. his elder brother is dead, killed in a tragic fire at Hawksford Castle—and the title of duke now falls to Edmund.

When he strives to rebuild the fire-scarred castle, Edmund learns that his was not the only life the fire shattered: his childhood friend Lady Phillipa survived the flames that took Edmund's brother, but badly burned, she has hidden herself away from those she loves. yet as the pair renews their acquaintance, they find that their affection runs deep—perhaps even deeper than they'd ever realized.

As Edmund and Pippa begin to question whether the fire was truly an accident, they must discover the truth of the past before they can plan for their future. While coming perilously close to the answers they seek, Edmund and Pippa find themselves at the mercy of a dangerous foe who will stop at nothing to lay claim on Hawksford—and he will destroy any who stand in his way.

REVIEW

Sian Ann Bessey has written a compelling story of love, loss, and struggle.  As Edmund returns home to face the disaster that occurred while he was away fighting for king and country with King Richard, he also must face responsibilities that he was never trained to handle.  Pippa, meanwhile, continues to heal from the injuries sustained in the devastating fire that caused so much harm. But when they meet again, the friendship from their childhood is renewed and they find great comfort in aiding each other.  But the danger to Hawksford remains and they must discover it's source before everything is lost.  Bessey has created some great characters who face some daunting challenges.  She does a great job creating a believable medieval setting full of interesting people and events.  The book provided a very engaging read.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: Her Fateful Debut by G.G. Vandagriff

ABOUT THE BOOK

Classic Regency romance with a dash of suspense . . .

Beautiful Miss Penelope Swinton wants to live out her life as a spinster in her beloved Northamptonshire, but with an ailing father and an entailed estate, she must come to London and enter the Marriage Mart. And if she must marry, she is determined to marry for love.

In a brief respite from the social whirl of the season, she retreats from the restrictions of the ton to sketch in the park and stumbles over a French spy. When Penelope finds her life in danger, Viscount Beau Wellingham steps up to protect her, however he has secrets of his own. Wellingham leads a clandestine life as an agent for the Foreign Office trapping spies. In defending her life, he unwittingly puts her reputation at risk.

In order to save Penelope from society’s scorn, Beau presses for a betrothal. Though she resists, he insists. Soon Beau is unable to deny the attraction he feels towards her. Before he can act on his feelings, danger rises again. This time, his life is on the line.

With a desperate spy closing in, Penelope must choose the safety of what she has always known or a chance for love. But will she be too late?

REVIEW

Vandagriff has done it again.  I always think that she can't possibly write another book as appealing as the one I just read, but she always manages to pull it off.  I found Her Fateful Debut to be as compelling as all Vandagriff's other works that I have read.  Beau and Penelope are both sympathetic and interesting characters.  Beau, an experienced Londoner and employee of the Foreign Office, inadvertently meets Miss Penelope in a park early in the morning when the double agent he is working with attacks Penelope's sketchbook with a vengeance.  This leads Beau into shadowing Penelope to protect her and then to a forced betrothal.  But Penelope has her own mind and several interesting twists get in the way of Penelope and Beau really getting to know each other.  But this is at its heart a romance and it was enjoyable to see Beau and Penelope's growing feelings for each other, despite their differences and the dangers involved.  A great Regency romance for those like me who just can't get enough.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: A Place for Miss Snow by Jennifer Moore

ABOUT THE BOOK

Miss Diane Snow is everything a British chaperone should be—she finds satisfaction in order and depends wholly upon the rules of decorum as she negotiates the isle of Greece with her young charge. But Miss Snow's prim and proper exterior masks a disquieting past: orphaned and alone in the world, she has only her stiff upper lip to rely on. When a brief encounter with a handsome stranger challenges her rules of propriety, Diana is unwittingly drawn into an adventure that will turn her ordered world upside down.

Alexandros Metaxas is a Greek spy working to recruit individuals to the cause of revolution. His mission seems to be going perfectly until he encounters Diana Snow, a captivating—if slightly cold—beauty. When their paths cross again, the ill-fated reunion threatens all Alex has been fighting for. But more importantly, it places Diana's life in jeopardy. There is only one way to save her: they must put themselves at the mercy of the most powerful pirate family in the Mediterranean. Soon, Diana is plunged into a fantastic world of gypsy curses, blood feuds, and unexpected romance. But when a bitter vendetta places her in mortal danger, will she have the courage to fight for life and love?

REVIEW

Jennifer Moore has a gift for writing a book that isn't too long and yet contains a great deal of content.  Her characters are always likable, though flawed and the situations they find themselves in are fascinating.  I love the way she depicts the time periods and places.  It's clear that she puts a lot of time and energy into getting it write, which I love in historical fiction.  The setting and circumstances of this particular book were entirely unfamiliar to me, maybe that's why I found it so intriguing.  I mean a Greek spy who is fighting for freedom for his homeland meeting up with a structured, controlled English chaperone.  What a great story.  I loved everything about this one, the characters, the setting, and the plot.  I even learned things about a time and place I knew very little about.  What a great combination of features for a regency romance.

REVIEW

If a book can be said to make you fall in love with a place, this one has done that for me.  I have long had a desire to visit Italy and this book certainly fed that desire.  Reading about all the different places that Stefano and Roxie visit was delicious.  The food descriptions seriously made me hungry.  And the romance was sweet, especially the way Stefano and Roxie supported each other in the face of tragedy and struggle. And the mystery surrounding Isabella de Medici was certainly a fascinating inclusion, despite the liberties taken (see author's note at the end).  And the secondary characters including Roxie's friend, Georgia, and Stefano's family were thoroughly engaging as well.  I certainly enjoyed reading this romance.

A PROPER ROMANCE: Lord Fenton's Folly by Josi S. Kilpack

ABOUT THE BOOK

Lord Fenton is a gambler, a dandy, and a flirt—and he must marry or else he will be disinherited, stripped of his wealth and his position. He chooses Alice Stanbridge for two simple reasons: he once knew her as a young girl, and she is the least objectionable option available to him.

However, Alice has harbored feelings for Fenton since their first meeting ten years ago, and she believes his proposal is real. When she discovers it is not, she is embarrassed and hurt. However, a match with the most-eligible bachelor in London would secure not only her future but that of her family as well.

Determined to protect herself from making a fool of herself a second time, Alice matches Lord Fenton wit for wit and insult for insult as they move toward a marriage of convenience that is anything but a happy union. Only when faced with family secrets that have shaped Fenton’s life does he let down his guard enough to find room in his heart for Alice. But can Alice risk her heart a second time?

REVIEW

Once again, Kilpack has created a romance that has more depth than most.  Her characters feel real with real strengths and weaknesses who make both good and bad decisions and have to live with the consequences.  Lord Fenton for the first time in ten years is forced to grow up in order to retain his position as heir to the Earl of Chariton (his father).  He even signs a contract agreeing to learn how to manage his property as well as marry.  But after ten years of hiding behind his drinking and ridiculous behavior, refusing to let anyone see the real him, Fenton doesn't know how to find a bride.  As a result, he takes his mother's advice and proposes to Alice Stanbridge by letter.  At first, Alice is thrilled as she remembers the boy she once had a crush on, but when it becomes apparent that he does not care for her and hides behind his drinking and absurd behavior, she puts up walls of her own.  With walls firmly in place it appears that all Alice and Fenton are capable of doing is arguing, refusing to let the other in.  But when Fenton's mother becomes ill and leaves London with Alice for company things begin to change.  And at Foxcroft, Fenton's mother's property, Alice realizes that there is more to the family than she ever imagined. And as Fenton begins to face the consequences of his parents' decisions, he realizes that he just may need Alice more than he would have ever thought.

I found the slow-growing romance here remarkably believable as both Fenton and Alice are forced to deal with the walls that Fenton has put up and doesn't know how to take down.  Both are uncertain and want to protect themselves and as a result they shut each other out for quite awhile.  The struggles that the characters go through facing both their own poor choices as well as the poor choices of others makes for great character growth, which I always enjoy reading. Not only is this book full of the period details that I so love, but full of characters great and small who shine through so clearly.  Kilpack has done a wonderful job creating a clean, thoughtful, brilliant read for those who enjoy not just a romance, but a romance with depth.

BLOG TOUR W/ GIVEAWAY: Royal Brides by Traci Hunter Abramson

ABOUT THE BOOK

In this eagerly anticipated companion novel to Royal Target and Royal Secrets, readers are invited back to the shimmering Mediterranean paradise of Meridia, where two royal weddings in a year are more than stressful—they're deadly...

Lovely Meridian native Noelle Saldera years for adventure, but as the daughter of palace servants, working at Prince Stefano's royal wedding may be as exciting as her life will get. But her options change drastically when she finds herself in the unlikely position of diffusing a bomb at the ceremony and being enlisted as the newest member of Meridian Intelligence—another wedding is in the works, and there can be no more close calls when Prince Stefano's brother, Garrett, walks down the aisle.

The bombing attempt at the first royal wedding leaves few clues as to the assailant's identity. Desperate for answers, Meridian officials enlist CIA agent Jeremy Rogers to prevent a repeat occurrence at the upcoming nuptials. The beauty of the plan: the bride is Jeremy's sister, so his cover is foolproof. What no one could anticipate is the instant connection between Jeremy and Noelle. Now, with their hearts on the line, the pair must work together to stop a seemingly unstoppable enemy before time runs out.

REVIEW

Abramson has written an enjoyable, romantic suspense novel that continues the adventures from Royal Target and Royal Secrets.  While I have not read the previous two books, this third novel gives enough background that I didn't feel at all lost.  I found Jeremy and Noelle to both be likeable, sympathetic characters.  I have no desire to be a spy, I couldn't live with all the secrets, it was interesting to see how Jeremy and Noelle dealt with the difficulty of each having to hide what their real jobs entail.  And then something rather surprising happens that made me wonder what real CIA policies are on relationships. Any the intrigue surrounding the marriages of the two princes was interesting to read as well as all the security precautions taken.  It made me glad not to be royalty.  With plenty of action as well as romance, Royal Brides makes for a clean and entertaining read.
