REVIEW

While I haven't finished the book yet, I've really enjoyed the parts I have read.  Kacey's story is an interesting one and his positive attitude makes it a pleasant read.  I even found myself laughing at his stubbornness and determination to succeed. I also appreciated the fact that his parents refused to let him become dependent.  The creative ways he found to do things that most people do without thinking about it was fascinating to read about.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: Holy as you are by Christie Gardiner

ABOUT THE BOOK

When referenced in the scriptures, the word holy means to "set apart for a sacred purpose." It is a description all women who seek to follow Christ want to embody—but the struggle between the ideal of a holy life and reality can seem far apart. In Holy As You Are, best-selling author Christie Gardiner seeks to close the gap reminding women of the holy attributes they already possess and how they can accomplish extraordinary ordinary things that will forever change the landscape and heart-scape of their world.

With a wealth of spiritual guidance and upbeat wisdom that doesn't shy away from difficult topics, this inspired volume challenges readers to look at their tragedies and triumphs and everything in between as sacred opportunities to choose holiness. What if ordinary is extraordinary? What if you are Holy As You Are?

REVIEW

In this inspirational book for Latter-day Saint women, Christie Gardiner writes about the importance of seeking to live a holy life.  Not that any of can do so perfectly, but that doesn't negate the blessings that come from doing our best on a daily basis.  The first couple of chapters focus on holiness of heart and holiness of agency and the importance of both in helping women develop their holy character.  She shares stories and experiences, both her own and others, to help make her points.  She goes on to discuss the importance of finding out own personal, 'ordinary extraordinary' ministers that we can pour our hearts and souls in, and find holiness in doing.  I found this book to be very inspiring as well as reassuring.  Sometimes it feels like nothing I do is ever quite good enough or important enough.  This book reminds me that that isn't the case.  I was reminded of the widow's mite and how it wasn't how much she gave that was important, but the manner in which she gave.  For women who are struggling to find peace and joy in the ordinary and the mundane I recommend this book as a reminder of the Lord's love for each of us.

LDS BOOK REVIEW: Worth the Wrestle by Sheri Dew

ABOUT THE BOOK

Why can’t I seem to conquer weaknesses that plague me?” “How do I know if I’m receiving revelation?” “Will the Lord forgive me after what I’ve done?” “Why can’t we seem to get ahead financially even though we faithfully pay our tithing?” “What if the Church’s position on gay marriage bothers me?”

Those are just a handful of the countless questions Sheri Dew has heard people ask over the years. “May I answer these questions,” she writes, “and any questions you may have, by posing a different question: Are you willing to engage in the wrestle? In an ongoing spiritual wrestle?”

In Worth the Wrestle, Sheri examines the process of asking good questions—whether those questions be doctrinal, procedural, historical, or intensely personal—and learning how to get answers. She demonstrates how to live by faith while seeking greater light and knowledge. And she testifies of principles that are worth wrestling for and of understanding that can be gained in no other way.

Table of Contents

Introduction
Chapter 1: Questions are Good
Chapter 2: Wrestling
Chapter 3: Receiving Answers
Chapter 4: Walking by Faith
Chapter 5: Cherishing Keys
Chapter 6: Standing as Witness
Conclusion: What is Worth Wrestling For?
Notes

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sheri Dew is a native of Ulysses, Kansas, and a graduate of Brigham Young University. She has written a number of books, including the biographies of two Presidents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Presidents Gordon B. Hinckley and Ezra Taft Benson. She served from 1997 to 2002 as Second Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency, and since March 2002, she has served as the Chief Executive Officer of Deseret Book Company. She now also serves as an executive vice president of Deseret Management Corporation.

REVIEW

Questions about life and about God are common to all of us.  I know I have many of my own.  Maybe that's why I found this book perfect for me.  I have a lot in common with Sister Dew, being still single at an age long past when I'd hoped to be married.  And I still have plenty of questions about it.  I really appreciated the candor with which the author explains the importance of being willing to search for answers, to 'wrestle' for answers so to speak.  The Lord wants us to invest ourselves in finding answers to our questions, in a matter of speaking, He wants us to demonstrate that we care enough for an answer to put forth the effort to get one.  Using personal experiences, scriptures and scripture stories, as well as quotes from LDS general authorities (that as members we consider to be prophets, seers, and revelators) showing the need to really invest ourselves in finding answers.  Asking questions can lead to answers when they are asked from a position of faith rather than doubt, believing that God can and will lead us to the answers in His own time and way.  In fact, Sister Dew suggests some really good questions for readers to start with.  The part I especially related to was the chapter on receiving answers, where the author suggests asking the Lord to show us how we as individuals perceive His responses.

For those who wonder if it's okay to have questions about the LDS church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints), its policies, doctrines, and practices, as well as questions about the Lord Himself, I highly recommend this book.  I found the book both informative and inspiring, and a powerful reminder that the Lord wants us to learn, He doesn't leave us comfortless, and He will answer our questions if we find the courage and persistence to ask.  He will even give us the right questions to ask if we feel lost.  I also agreed with Sister Dew's point that once we've received answers, it's important to then stand as a witness for those things that we have learned.  A wonderful read that I loved and will undoubtedly read again.

REVIEW

Women have had a very important place in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS or Mormon Church) since the very beginning.  And not just serving as wives and mothers, as vital a role as that is.  This book focuses on the efforts of the first lady missionaries.  I loved reading about the hard work that these ladies put in, helping the church grow, and demonstrating to the world that Mormon women are not mistreated by the church and its leaders.  I also found it fascinating to learn that lady missionaries were requested by leaders in various missions around the world because they could go places and do things that they men could not.  This book may not be long but it packs a punch as it tells stories and experiences of these lady's who gave all they had to the Lord.

LDS BOOK REVIEW: On the Path Home by Henry B. Eyring

ABOUT THE BOOK

"Each time a line of truth comes to us, we get to choose what we will do about it," writes President Henry B. Eyring. "If we try hard to do what that truth requires of us, God will send more light and more truth. It will go on, line after line, as long as we choose to obey the truth."

In this classic collection of quotations from President Eyring, eternal truths are presented a line or two at a time, giving us opportunity to ponder, to learn, and to grow. Accompanied by beautiful illustrations and typography, these gems of thought will spark meaningful discussion, offer a quick uplift, or inspire readers who just want to take a quiet moment to draw closer to the Lord.

REVIEW

Deseret Book knows how to create a beautiful quote book.  Not only is the book full of beautiful words by President Eyring (1st counselor in the presidency for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) but the photographs have clearly been carefully and beautifully chosen to highlight those words.  Gorgeous photographs of outside shots of light along with inside shots of typewriters and people and books and a variety of other things.  This is the sort of book that one turns to for a quick shot of inspiration when time is tight and the heart is weary.  The quotes focus on the journey of life, the truths, light, trials, and tribulations that all people face while here on earth.  A wonderful combination of inspirational words and gorgeous photographs makes this a great gift book.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: The Beautiful Balance by Michelle Wilson

ABOUT THE BOOK

Whether in your family, your ward, or your community, you've observed them: those noble individuals who are strong, patient, and stalwart in the face of adversity. When times are tough, how do they manage the challenging shift from victim to victor? Chances are they have figured out the balance of control—what they have charge of and what is in the Lord's hands.
Trying to manage the ups and downs of life can feel overwhelming, but fortunately we're not alone on this journey. With inspiring doctrinal insights and a healthy dose of humor, author Michelle Wilson inspires readers to let go of fear and find peace, even in the midst of lost jobs, health challenges, or everyday chaos at home. In a world that seems so tempestuous, The Beautiful Balance is a sweet reminder of exactly what we can control—ourselves—and what God controls—all the rest.

REVIEW

I enjoy reading inspirational books like this one by Michelle Wilson.  Somehow in the busyness of each day, it's easy to forget to seek balance.  I get too busy feeling guilty over one thing or another.  I fret over the next thing that needs to be done or that I didn't get done.  The Beautiful Balance takes a look at these thoughts and feelings as the author shares some of her own struggles and the stories of others who have struggled as well with finding balance and accepting the fact that there is much in each of our lives that we can't control.  But Wilson also points out something I've been thinking a lot about recently and that is accountability: stepping up and being responsible for our own actions and thoughts and choices.  By doing this and then turning the rest over to God, it's possible to find peace and beauty in our lives.  If you as a reader are looking for a book to help you find peace, to inspire you to focus on the things you can do something about, or a book to comfort you with stories of others like you, look no further.  This book fits that description to a tee.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: I Can Forgive with God compiled by Ganel-Lyn Condie

ABOUT THE BOOK

Are unresolved feelings of anger, resentment, and guilt keeping you from living your best life? It's time to let go of the pain and make the life-changing decision to forgive. A stirring new work from bestselling author Ganel-Lyn Condie, I Can Forgive with God features the personal accounts of an incredible group of women who have harnessed the power of forgiveness after enduring the furnace of affliction. from divorce and death to addiction and abuse, these sisters' experiences are linked by one common truth: the power of absolution is available to all through hard work and faithful reliance on our loving Heavenly Father.

The women spotlighted in these stories have come face-to-face with devastating tragedies and trials, ultimately learning to forgive those who have hurt them—including themselves. With the help of this book, you too can find strength in the Lord—the giver of grace—to see your mistakes and others' through the lens of forgiveness.

REVIEW

Forgiveness is a topic that applies to us all.  I know that I've had plenty of times in my own life where I needed to forgive or be forgiven.  Books like this remind me that I'm not alone in that need.  The stories in this book are all true stories although the names for some of them have been withheld to protect privacy which is understandable once you read them.  The ladies who are sharing their stories are revealing some very personal information here about heartache and healing.  The stories cover the following topics:

  • Moments of Truth
  • Marriage
  • Parenthood
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Looking Past the Past
I'll admit right out that I found these stories both touching and compelling.  I even found myself with tears in my eyes at times.  While I haven't experienced anything quite like these women, I have experienced pain of my own and the healing that they talk about can come to any who seek it through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.  Some of the wounds mentioned here weren't overcome or healed in a day.  In fact most of the experiences shared took years to overcome.  And some pain may take a lifetime to heal.  But as these ladies point out, it is possible through faith in the healing power and love of Jesus Christ.

LDS BOOK REVIEW: A Summer with Great-Aunt Rose by Dieter F. Uchtdorf

ABOUT THE BOOK

When eleven-year-old Eva is sent to stay with her great-aunt Rose for the summer, she can think of a thousand reasons why she does not want to be there. But as the summer progresses, she discovers that Great-Aunt Rose had learned some things about life that have made her the happiest person Eva has ever known.

The story of Eva's discovery is contained in President Dieter F. Uchtdorf's insightful parable originally delivered at the October 2015 general women's session of general conference. With charming full-color illustrations by fine artist Salvador Alvarez (the creator of Joy in the Journey, the pioneer-girl painting referred to by President Uchtdorf), this modern-day parable will teach and uplift women of all ages and life situations.

REVIEW

While this talk can be found for free on the lds.org website, Deseret Book has done a beautiful job turning the story into a beautiful gift book.  The inclusion of the painting that is mentioned in the story is a particularly nice touch.  The rest of the illustrations in the book are by the same artist as the painting (see cover) and are beautifully done.  The illustrations and decorations make this a truly gorgeous book.  But of course the story told within is what makes the book so powerful.  This is a book that I will read over and over again as I remind myself of the multiple meanings contained in President Uchtdorf's beautiful parable.

Eva is sent to visit her Great-Aunt Rose while her mother recovers from surgery.  Eva is not excited to go and worries a great deal about her mother.  Once things with her mother settle down a bit, Eva starts to notice things about her Great-Aunt Rose that puzzle her a bit.  Gospel principles are shared between Eva and Rose once Eva works up the nerve to ask her the questions that have puzzled her.

This is a wonderful gift book for those who enjoy a more permanent reminder of the wonderful things this parable has to share.
