BLOG TOUR: For This We Are Soldiers by Carla Kelly

ABOUT THE BOOK

From master storyteller Carla Kelly comes this collection of frontier tales that take you behind typical army lines and into the hearts of ordinary men and women who perform extraordinary acts of bravery. From handsome hospital stewards and dashing soldiers to courageous children and wives who will pull at your heartstrings, there’s something for everyone’s fancy.

REVIEW

One of the things that I love about this book is that it's all about ordinary people.  People like me who did the best they could with what they had.  This book focuses on the decades related to what historians call the Indian Wars, basically the years that the U.S. Army spent fighting various Indian tribes.  In this book we meet a new bride forced to adjust to poor living conditions and her husband being gone for weeks at a time.  A shy hospital steward who is attracted to a biracial woman who serves an officer's family.  A black soldier's risking his life to save a young girl's white father leaving a family forever indebted.  A young mother working as a laundress who leaves an unforgettable impact on a newly minted young officer.  And an experienced sergeant waiting to win the woman he loves while putting up with a spoiled young officer.  Each story tugged at my heart strings, some in happy ways, some in heartbreaking ways.  The story about the hospital cows and some stolen milk made me laugh out loud as a young corporal, eager to win the heart of a young hospital matron, is forced to search for the thief.  The story of the young mother working as a laundress broke my heart as she patiently continued to struggle to care for both her own child and two adopted children despite little compassion or help from anyone else.  Carly Kelly has written another book that I will gladly place on my favorites shelf.  I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy reading historical fiction with a dash of romance.

REVIEW

Another great romance by Carla Kelly, Softly Falling, focuses on the power of human beings to rely on each other for survival.  For me to thoroughly enjoy a romance I have to connect with the characters.  I knew this one would be interesting because of the survival aspects of the story.  Wyoming winters are rather famous for their severity so the idea of being stuck in one with no real help available is one that intrigued me. I also found myself very much liking both Lily and Jack.  Lily for her courage in facing a whole boatload of disappointments when she meets up with her alcoholic father.  Jack's admirable characteristics include a determination to succeed despite a life full of hard knocks. But they weren't the only characters that I enjoyed.  In these kind of stories I always enjoy child characters and the three in this one were no exception, especially since these three girls and one boy have had some pretty big challenges themselves.  It was fun to see Lily learn how to work with these children.  The details of life on a Wyoming ranch make me supremely grateful not to have lived on one.  That is one of the things that Kelly is especially good at historical details and enjoyable dialogue.  Another winner from a great romance writer.

BLOG TOUR: Carla Kelly's Christmas Collection by Carla Kelly

Carla Kelly Christmas blog tour

12953006ABOUT THE BOOK

Come explore Regency London with Carla Kelly! This collection features four stories that will warm your heart with Christmas cheer:

The Christmas Ornament: When the father of his now-deceased best friend hints that he should consider his daughter as a potential wife, Lord James Crandall isn’t sure he can get past the fact that he used to tease her mercilessly when she was just a girl. But once he finds out how brilliant her mind is, he’s not sure he can get past the fact that she’s a woman. Add in the fact that her charms have garnered the attentions of other gentlemen, Lord Crandall is in for quite the roller coaster Christmas.

Make a Joyful Noise: Widower Marquis Peter Chard is grateful for his two children, but not so grateful when his mother gives him the chore of recruiting people for the parish Christmas choir competition. When recently widowed and pregnant Rosie Wheatherby turns up with the voice of an angel and the looks to match, Lord Chard isn’t about to let her get away from the choir . . . or his family.

An Object of Charity: Stuck on land while his ship is being repaired, Captain Michael Lynch is approached by his late first mate’s niece and nephew. Learning they are destitute, he decides to take them home with him for the holidays, returning for the first time in 22 years ago. As he spends more time with them and unburdens his heart to the young woman, she replaces his hurt with love in time for a very special Christmas.

The Three Kings: After her brother is shot by the French in Spain, Lady Sarah Comstock is forced to travel across the war-torn countryside with a Spanish Colonel. As Christmas quickly approaches, Sarah learns about the Three Kings giving gifts to the Christ child and finds a gift of her own that she can share—her heart.

Filled with romance and a touch of humor, these stories are sure to find a place in your heart and remind you that Christmas is a time for love.

REVIEW

I truly enjoy Carla Kelly's romances. Her characters are fun and make me smile or roll my eyes at their antics and I never feel like they are formulaic in any way.  I have to admit that I do have a special affection for the Regency era, which is strange since I really would not have wanted to live then, but there you are.  These stories are shorter than I normally like but plenty enjoyable just the same.  I am not normally a huge fan of short stories because they lack the depth that longer stories possess, but I did quite enjoy these.  And the variety is remarkable.  Everything from sailors, to soldiers, to scholars, and farmers are met in these stories, but above everything is love despite weaknesses and mistakes, love conquers all. And I love those kind of stories.

After her husband’s death, Roxanna Drew is faced with the daunting task of providing for her two small girls on her own. Pursued by her lecherous brother-in-law, Roxanna knows her only hope is to escape his grasp by moving into a derelict cottage, owned by Lord Winn—a man known to his tenants only by his checkered reputation.

But when fate brings Lord Winn to her door in the middle of a snowstorm, Roxanna’s not sure which to fear more: letting him into her home or into her heart.

A strong-willed heroine, perfectly paced plot, and plenty of humorous moments make this one of bestselling author Carla Kelly’s most beloved Regency romances. Discover the magic of a love story you’ll want to read again and again.

REVIEW

I have become enchanted with Carla Kelly's books. I think what I enjoy best are her characters. I have yet to read one of her books where I didn't fall in love with her characters, especially the children.  In this one, Roxanna has two delightful, but very different daughters. I found myself laughing at their antics, especially the antics of the precocious four-year-old Lissy.  Lord Winn I found intriguing, certainly a flawed man, but a hero none-the-less. As the relationship between Winn and Roxanna developed I was reminded how each of us is heavily influenced by the people around us.  Both Winn and Roxanna change as a result of meeting each other.

I loved the setting also.  The beautiful rolling hills of Yorkshire is some place I'd love to visit one day. I enjoyed the way Roxanna didn't let her brother-in-law's horrible actions stop her from doing her best for her daughters.  It was fun to follow along and she and Winn put Moreland to rights. I love the kind of description that Kelly uses to create a picture in the reader's mind of the setting. For me a believable setting is key to a believable story.

The plot moves along at just the right pace.  There's enough time to get to know the characters while not moving too slowly. I enjoyed reading about the characters and the changes that occurred as they got to know each other with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. I especially enjoyed the scenes with Lord Winn and Roxie's daughters. For a man who didn't want children, he sure had a way with them.

If you love sweet clean romance stories with humor and a great setting thrown in I highly recommend this one.
