REVIEW

Oh, my goodness!  What a voice!  I absolutely loved this album.  Not only does Pacheco have a gorgeous voice but the music was beautiful and the arrangements amazing.  I was previously familiar with some of these songs, such as His Love, which I remember from my Especially for Youth experience many years ago, also How Great Thou Art and Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing are old favorites of mine.  But the arrangements are new and clearly perfect for Pacheco's voice.  I literally got chills listening to this.  I can safely say that this is now a favorite album and will be listened to many times in the future. I highly recommend that if you enjoy spiritually touching music that you check this one out.

TALK ON CD REVIEW: Ask of God by John Bytheway

ABOUT THE CD

In this high-tech era, we are overflowing with information—and sadly, some misinformation. More information means more questions! In this engaging presentation based on James 1:5-6, John Bytheway evaluates three types of questions: "Gotcha," "Google," and "Golden." Golden questions are the most important in life, involving gospel truths and our place in the plan of salvation. "The problem," Brother Bytheway states, "is when we expect Google-speed answers to Golden Questions." Using scriptural stories, quotations from Church leaders, and a good dose of humor, Brother Bytheway encourages listeners to "Ask in Faith." As they do, they'll learn to find their own answers to difficult questions—and the first step in this vital process is to "Ask of God."

REVIEW

I knew going in that I would probably enjoy this talk quite a bit.  I've listened to talks and presentations given by John Bytheway before and thoroughly enjoyed them.  And I did indeed really enjoy listening to this approximately hour long talk about seeking answers from God.  I loved the way that Bytheway divided his talk into a discussion of three types of questions: gotcha questions, Google questions, and golden questions.  "Gotcha" questions are those designed to manipulate others into giving you what you want.  Several scriptural examples of individuals doing this to the Savior and his prophets.  People who use these sorts of questions don't really want a legitimate answer, and in fact may already know the answer.  Google questions are information questions that the Google browser can provide answers to, but it's just information, no wisdom is provided to help use the information gathered.  Golden questions are the sorts of questions that people really, sincerely desire an answer to and can be answered through the gospel and God himself.  But as Bytheway points out, society has trained people to want answers to "Golden" questions, in the same amount of time as Google provides answers, and many times, the answers don't come that way.  Using stories, quotes, and scripture references, Brother Bytheway explains the importance of prayer and how it is for our good to use it the way the Lord designed it to work.  He also points out the important of having faith in God, and being willing to 'wrestle' to find the answers we seek, especially when they don't come right away.  This is an inspiring talk that is aimed at youth, but that has great advice and reminders for anyone who cares to listen.  Highly recommended.

CD REVIEW: Hold On: A Modern Tribute to the Music of Michael McLean

ABOUT THE CD

Eric Robertson, a popular producer in Provo, has brought together an impressive list of talented vocalists to sing on new, fresh productions of classic Michael McLean songs. The vocalists include some of the top names from the burgeoning Provo music scene, including Elaine Bradley, from Neon Trees, and Ryan Innes, one of the top contestants on NBC's The Voice. Eric grew up listening to Michael McLean songs and still feels a strong connection to them. This album is an effort to pay tribute to those songs and produce them in a way that will speak to a younger generation of LDS youth.

Track List

Hold On, the Light Will Come feat. Scott Shepard
Give a Little Bit of Yourself feat. Catherine Leavy
You're Not Alone feat. Andrew Langdon
Gentle feat. Drew Danburry
I Can't Do Everything feat. Brooke White of American Idol
Homeless feat. Ryan Innes of The Voice
You've Always Been There for Me feat. Elaine Bradley of Neon Trees
Share the Joy feat. Severin Bozung
Be the Joy feat. Eric Robertson
Promise of Light feat. Adam and Darcie Sanders
**Individual tracks available on iTunes.

REVIEW

I was a bit startled by the new arrangements of some of my old favorite Michael McClean songs.  But once I got used to it, I really liked it.  The jazzier feel to the music is bound to appeal to young listeners and a whole new generation.  While the changes aren't likely to appeal to everyone, I thoroughly enjoyed them.  I couldn't help singing along and tapping my foot. And the messages are as great as always.

BOOK REVIEW

While not strictly a story, My Home Can Be a Holy Place, shares the experiences of Lily and her family as they strive to make their home a holy place.  Each page details a particular aspect of their efforts, a home of prayer, a home where members work together, a home blessed by priesthood power, etc.  Additionally, each page has a quote from a general authority or a scripture that highlights the principle being shared.  Dan Burr's illustrations are gorgeous (as usual) and do a beautiful job of highlighting important aspects of the text. The book would work well with younger children and families that need help focusing on making their home a better place.  Plus the book is just a beautiful reminder of what an ideal home looks like.  While home is rarely a perfect place, following the principles outlined in this book will sure bring a family that much closer to it.  Perfect for family home evenings or even bedtime.

These songs will help you see and enjoy more in life, it’s the perfect album to keep you dancing and singing through the summer.

Track List:

Living Water

ABOUT THE ARTIST

A native of San Diego, CALEE REED has been writing and singing songs since she was a little girl. Her latest work shows her at her peak vocally and stylistically. She writes songs that capture raw emotion and vivid imagery, helping the listener tune into their own faith journey and find the peace and joy that she points out from her own experience. As a new mother, she makes poignant observations about the depth and meaning of the human experience, with all of its ups and downs. Her latest album is a heartfelt testimony that reflects the joy she has found in her journey.

REVIEW

This lovely album by a talented new artist shares beautiful messages combined with a nice pop sound.  The songs carry a strong Christian message about the power of Jesus Christ to help us be 'enough', find miracles in our lives, and Come Unto Christ.  The music is fun and upbeat with a couple of slower songs to balance things out (Miraculous and Come Unto Christ).  I especially liked the song, I Am Enough, which refers to God loving us despite our imperfections and need to change.  The combination of a nice voice, beautiful songs, and great messages makes this a very pleasant album, especially if you like Cheri Call and Hilary Weeks, as this CD is reminiscent of their style.

CD REVIEW: Madilyn Paige

ABOUT THE PRODUCT

This stunning self-titled debut EP features a set of tunes notable for their raw emotion and beautiful soundscapes. Madilyn wrote or co-wrote every song on the album, drawin from her own struggles as a teenager and her heartfelt expressions of the joy she finds in life. The first track, "Irreplaceable," begins with aching introspection and soars to an assurance of self-worth; the folloring track, "Foolish Game," was written right after Madilyn left the TV show The Voice and gives insight into the inevitability of discouragement in life and the realization that you can rise above the games that people play. An epic movie score string section combines with powerful rhythms on "Undercover," a breathtaking song about overcoming sadness and seeking the light all around you. The final track, "Little Things," playfully reminds us that the little things in life are the source of true joy.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

MADILYN PAIGE is a singer-songwriter from Provo, Utah. As a young child, she lived in Japan. She took up singing after she moved back to the U.S. She loves making music videos and short films with her friends and has performed in various local competitions.

MUSIC VIDEO

REVIEW

I have to admit, I was a bit surprised by the pop sound of Madilyn's voice/music.  I guess I was just expecting something else.  I hadn't heard her sing or perform before so I was surprised.  The sound has grown on me though as I have listened to it.  And I like the message of some of the songs, especially Irreplaceable and Little Things. As I've looked at the lyrics of the various songs (see here to listen to samples) it feels like Paige is sharing some of her experiences in her introduction to the music profession.  For example, in Little Things the song talks about how fancy cars and fame don't bring happiness, nor does running away solve one's problems, that it's the little things that are important.  Teens are likely to be the best audience for this music.

TALK ON CD REVIEW: Embark! by John Bytheway

ABOUT THE TALK

An ideal talk that supports the new 2015 Mutual theme!

In this motivating talk related to the 2015 youth theme, John Bytheway explains what it means to truly embark — to get fully on board in the service of God with all your heart, might, mind, and strength. Using scriptures, powerful stories, and his characteristic humor, John explains that with the Savior's help, we can remain on board and eventually stand blameless before God at the last day.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

JOHN BYTHEWAY served a mission to the Philippines and later graduated from Brigham Young University. He has a master’s degree in religious education and is a part-time instructor at the BYU Salt Lake Center. John is the author of many bestselling books, audio talks, and DVDs, including How to Be an Extraordinary Teen; Life Rocks; and his first children’s picture book, The Sacrament. He and his wife, Kimberly, have six children.

REVIEW

I've always enjoyed listening to John Bytheway.  He is such an informative as well as entertaining speaker.  He manages to combine the spiritual message with humor in such a way that it is unforgettable.  And this talk is no different.  This talk focuses on the upcoming youth theme for 2015: Embark.  He speaks first about what embark refers to and uses the analogy of getting on the gospel train throughout the rest of the talk.  This creates a concrete image in the listener's mind.  He goes on to discuss exactly what it means to embark by discussing service (whole-hearted service rather than half-hearted), following Christ, and staying on board once we get there.  A wonderful collection of doctrines, quotes, stories, and humor that any teen or adult is bound to enjoy. Highly recommended.

CD REVIEW: He is Risen by Mormon Tabernacle Choir

ABOUT THE CD

Featuring heartwarming and uplifting hymns like Christ the Lord Is Risen Today, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, and He is Risen, your Easter holiday will be filled with true remembrance and thankfulness for Christ, His life and the love He shows for each of God's Children.

ABOUT THE CHOIR

The 360 members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir represent men and women from many different backgrounds and professions and range in age from 25 to 60. They reflect a medley of unique lives and experiences and are brought together by their love for singing and their faith. Their incomparable voices are the common chord that unites to form the choral group known all over the world as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir originated in the mid-19th century in Salt Lake City. As the Latter-day Saints moved west, Church President Brigham Young included musicians among members of the advance parties. Consequently, a small choir first sang for a conference of the Church in the Salt Lake Valley on August 22, 1847, just 29 days after the first group arrived. The origins of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir may be found in the desire and commitment of early converts to include appropriate music in both sacred and secular events.
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has appeared at 13 world’s fairs and expositions, performed at the inaugurations of five U.S. presidents, and sung for numerous worldwide telecasts and special events. Five of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s recordings have achieved “gold record” and two have achieved “platinum record” status. The most popular was the Grammy-Award-winning 1959 release of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
REVIEW

The music on this CD is beautiful and worshipful, perfect for the Easter season or any time. I always enjoy listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I find their music so relaxing and spiritually sustaining.  And the arrangements always work so well. I highly recommend you listen to this CD.

REVIEW

I don't normally review CD's, I prefer books.  But when this opportunity came up, I couldn't say no and I'm glad I didn't.  I found the music on this CD particularly lovely and touching.  It almost felt at times like the artist/songwriter had looked right into my heart.  The songs were positive and uplifting and beautifully written and sung.  So much music these days is negative that I found it very refreshing to listen to the positive messages about love and courage and God. I highly recommend that you listen to the songs yourself. You can check out the album here. I think my favorite song was "Another Second Chance." I loved this one because it focuses on needing another chance to change after messing up again.  That happens to me all the time. I heartily recommend this music to those who enjoy positive, uplifting music.
