She Owns the Knight by Diane Darcy, Amazon Bestseller!— Why does Gillian Corbett have to travel seven hundred years through time to find a decent guy?... Why can't Sir Kellen Marshall find a lady who is obedient, submissive... or at least not trying to kill him?

Heart of the Ocean by Heather B. Moore, Amazon Bestseller!— A dark secret . . . a grieving ghost . . . a handsome stranger . . . What more could Eliza Robinson want? Except for maybe her life. PRETTY DARN FUNNY Episode #5: Fitness Challenge with BOOK GIVEAWAY

Headshot GracieA comedy like no other. For your sister and your mother.

Pretty Darn Funny is a comedy web series about life as a woman, a mother and...comedian.

The award winning Pretty Darn Funny web series started in April 2012 and has continued to keep thousands of people laughing. Pretty Darn Funny has won five Telly awards, honored along side other notable recipients such as Time Warner Cable, ABC Family Digital Media,  and AOL Media.  Its parody videos were featured on The 700 Club, the flagship television program of the Christian Broadcasting Network, airing in syndication throughout the United States.
Season 1 Followed Gracie Moore, a mom who gets more than she bargains for when she forms an all-female comedy troupe in efforts to clean up the local comedy scene. It features a cast of colorful, loveable characters. It will make you laugh. It might make you cry (from laughing so hard). However you spin it, we know you'll think it's Pretty Darn Awesome.
Season 2 is launching August 2013 and continues the craziness of Gracie's life. From battling crossfit and the pressures of Pinterest envy, to competing with the PTA president for superior fundraising cred, Gracie and the troop show that no matter what life throws at you it's always worth the laughs.
Each new “bite-sized” 6-8 minute webisode is released weekly and is designed for your busy lifestyle. (Meaning you can watch it in-between picking up your kids from soccer, making a fabulous meal that half of your kids will probably refuse to eat, and composing what is sure to be the best blog post ever written in the history of the world. You know, in all your free time.)

Pretty Darn Funny is your new best friend. Your new, very funny, best friend.

Everything Pretty Darn Funny is Brought to you by Deseret Book and Tinder Transmedia.

EPISODE #5: FITNESS CHALLENGE

REVIEW

My favorite line, "Does the pine box have a pillow?" That is how I feel after a workout. Hmmm. I wonder if that's why I am so out of shape.  I'll have to think about that. Meanwhile, if you are as workout phobic as I am you really need to watch this episode because it will justify everything you have been telling yourself for years. If you love to exercise it will help you feel even better about yourself.  I have say though that I've heard the saying, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" so many times, yet I've never seen it happen, I wonder why that is. Something else to think about. I think perhaps the saying should be, "what doesn't kill you, doesn't kill you" or something like that. So whether you like to exercise, hate to exercise, or simply like to watch people suffer, this show is for you. (You might end up laughing too.)

Powersomethingstupid5082075_detailWhat if the smartest people in the world understand something that the rest of us don't? (They do.) What if they know that in order to achieve success, they will sometimes have to do things that others may initially perceive as stupid? The fact of the matter is that the smartest people in the world don't run from stupid, they lean into it (in a smart way).
In The Power of Starting Something Stupid, Richie Norton redefines stupid as we know it, demonstrating that life-changing ideas are often tragically mislabeled stupid. What if the key to success, creativity, and fulfillment in your life lies in the potential of those stupid ideas? This deeply inspiring book will teach you:
  • How to crush fear, make dreams happen, and live without regret.
  • How to overcome obstacles such as lack of time, lack of education, or lack of money.
  • The 5 actions of the New Smart to achieve authentic success.
No more excuses. Learn how to start something stupid — the smartest thing you can do. Drawing on years of research, including hundreds of face-to-face interviews and some of the world's greatest success stories past and present, Richie shows you how stupid is the New Smart — the common denominator for success, creativity, and innovation in business and life.

EPISODE 4: "Basket Case"

Gracie faces-off with a rival PTA mom to prove who is the busiest--and best--mom by gathering the most donations for the school basket auction. But pulling together 30 cute baskets the night before the fundraiser is a bigger job than she bargained for...

REVIEW

Oh, goodness. These make me laugh. Who knew that pride went before a PTA-who-can-provide-the-most-and-best-baskets-for-auction campaign. I've watched the PTA ladies at my school and they work there tails off helping, but I've never seen anything quite like this.  The baskets provided are definitely interesting, I mean, seriously, a dental basket with free floss and root canal included. How charming?! Be sure to watch it yourself and enjoy your laugh for the week.

REVIEW
I haven't figured out yet how these episodes keep getting funnier but they do. I thought my budget was bad until I saw this episode. I mean watered down milk, like yuck. Showering and doing laundry at the same time is rather creative, but it sounds like a lot of work.  T-shirts from the garbage with distorted brands (don't want to violate copyright). The family makes drastic sacrifices (no shaving cream, expired food storage for lunch) in order to afford their family portrait. But of course things don't turn out as planned. I won't tell you how because that will spoil the fun.  Lots of laugh out loud moments make for an entertaining experience.

GIVEAWAY

Rocky-road.f_detail
It was supposed to be a girls’ weekend in scenic St. George, Utah that would include shopping, trying out the local cuisine, and participating in a breast cancer fundraiser. The fact that one of the organizers of the fundraising event, a local doctor, disappeared two months ago was not supposed to be Sadie’s problem. In fact, she refuses to participate in the grassroots investigation her friend Caro, and Caro’s cousin, Tess, have put together prior to her arrival. But then she meets the ex-wife of the missing doctor. How could she not ask a few questions . . . that lead to a few more questions . . . that lead to a small town and yet even more questions. Before she knows it, Sadie is in the middle of yet another murder investigation and trying to piece together a convoluted trail of good intentions, hidden motivations, and philanthropy turned big business.

Giggle, giggle, snort! I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds pinterest a bit depressing.  The amazing graphics that I couldn't duplicate in a million years. The hours dedicated that I would rather spend reading. Sigh. I guess I'm a pinterest failure too. Be sure to watch this episode though and be relieved that copying things from pinterest is an art form in and of itself.

Excerpt 2 from Journey of Promise:

Leah peered inside the box of supplies and saw a chunk of beef infested with maggots. “Who would do this? And why?”
“We need that ham,” Claire said. “We have mouths to feed. What are we goin’ to do?”
Leah reached inside the box and snagged the meat in her bare hand. “I’m gettin’ our ham back.”
“What are you—” Claire watched as her sister turned and stormed up the companionway.
Leah fumed all the way to the forecastle, to the captain’s quarters. She wasn’t about to let this assault on her family go without a fight. She raised her hand to knock on the captain’s door but was stopped by Franklin. “You can’t go in there,” he barked, barring the way.
“Mr. Franklin,” she said, her voice tinged with anger, “I need to see the captain.”
Franklin glowered as Leah. “The captain’s a busy man. What do you want?”
Leah shoved the spoiled maggot-filled meat toward his face. “Someone aboard ship stole our ham and left thisin its place! I want the captain to do somethin’ about it!”
Franklin lowered her arm with his hand, repulsed by the rancid beef. “The captain can do nothin’ about it,” he said. His eyes narrowed. “And for all I know, you might be lookin’ to trade this spoiled meat for someone’s ham you’d claim as your own.”
“How dare you accuse me of such a thing,” she said, stamping her foot. “I’ve come to have things made right and you treat me as if I’m the thief!”
Franklin smirked and clasped his hands behind his back. “See it however you want,” he said. “The captain won’t be disturbed over it. Maybe you should be thankful for what you have and eat it.”
This matter was beyond that of just stealing. It was a threat to her family’s condition—a deprivation of the food that cost them so dearly, the very nourishment they needed to survive the coming weeks. Leah’s anger exploded as she pushed the rotted meat into Franklin’s smug face. “You eat it!” She spun and charged off.

BLOG TOUR/GIVEAWAY: Parenting with Spiritual Power by Julie K. Nelson

ABOUT THE BOOK

"I wish children came with an instruction manual!"

How many times have we heard this lament by a frustrated or overwhelmed parent? Perhaps we have said these words ourselves.  There are "how-to" manuals for practically anything: installing a new faucet, building a remote control car, baking an apple pie, refinishing an antique chair, or assembling a bicycle.  Is there a formula or a perfect manual for raising children? Yes! The scriptures.

In Parenting With Spiritual Power, Julie Nelson examines the lives of mothers and fathers in the scriptures (the best instruction manual) and the parenting principles we can learn from them.  Discover powerful parenting examples from Adam and Eve, Moses, the brother of Jared, and Captain Moroni, along with suggestions for personal application in this essential book.

REVIEW

First off I will admit that I am not a parent.  But I am a teacher and the principles that Julie Nelson highlights in this book apply just as much to me as to any parent.  The importance of focusing on the positive rather than the negative, giving warnings, offering doctrine to help children make better choices, and nourishing and encouraging them rather than trying to force them are all very important when working with people, not just with children.  I loved the way she used the scriptures (the LDS scriptures include the King James version of the Bible, The Book of Mormon, the Doctrine & Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price) and stories from the scriptures to highlight the points she was trying to make.  She also uses quotes from former and current leaders of the church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Mormon/LDS church) to highlight especially important points.

The chapter on developing and exercising faith in both the child and the Lord's growth process I found especially comforting.  When it comes to children, results are not always immediate, it can take months or years to see the fruit of one's labors, but one must never give up and continue to exercise patience, long-suffering, and diligence. The author points out that when a child is born there is a great deal of potential there, but the parent doesn't know yet what that potential might be or the best way to bring it to fruition, the parent and child must learn and grow together.

For those who are parents or who work with children on a regular basis this book provides many principles and reminders about what is most important to remember and practice.  I can highly recommend this book to those who are frustrated or confused or exhausted.  The book is not only inspiring but a powerful reminder of just how much our Heavenly Father loves us and our children.
