Premise:

When a cursed dragon-witch kidnaps the lovely Lady Gleamdren, Eanrin sets boldly forth on a rescue mission...and a race against his rival for Gleamdren's favor. Intent upon his quest, the last thing the immortal Faerie needs is to become mixed up with the troubles of an insignificant mortal.

But when he stumbles upon a maiden trapped in an enchanted sleep, he cannot leave her alone in the dangerous Wood Between. One waking kiss later, Eanrin suddenly finds his story entangled with that of young Starflower. A strange link exists between this mortal girl and the dragon-witch. Will Starflower prove the key to Lady Gleamdren's rescue? Or will the dark power from which she flees destroy both her and her rescuer?

GUEST POST
Part Three
To be Bound is to be Free

"Strange, piteous, futile man. How desperately you have fought all that would make you whole." (p. 328)

My hero, Eanrin, spends the whole of this novel fleeing all bindings, fleeing all the snares that love entails. But in the end, where is real life to be found save in love? Yes, to give in and open his heart will mean a form of slavery. Nevermore will the brave and bold Eanrin be his own master. Nevermore will he dance his way carelessly through life, untouched and untroubled by the concerns of others.

The alternative, however, is more dreadful by far. The alternative is to become like the dragon-witch herself. Consumed with fire, obsessed with strength, unwilling and unable to acknowledge any power but her own, Hri Sora lives a life of death. She lives a life devoid of love, safely hidden behind her own scorched walls.

By contrast, Starflower moves through this story with a softness and quiet strength that is deceptive.  Everywhere she goes, the vulnerability of her love opens her to danger and imminent destruction. And yet it is she who triumphs over life and death.

Starflower has learned the secret of binding love. In that binding, she has found true freedom, a freedom she may communicate to others.

Is it worth the price? Is the peril of true love worth the danger? Is it worth denying one's self for the sake of others who may or may not even love in return?

To this I say emphatically, "Yes!"

“It is by loving, and not by being loved, that one can come nearest the soul of another; yea, that, where two love, it is the loving of each other, that originates and perfects and assures their blessedness. I knew that love gives to him that loveth, power over any soul he loved, even if that soul know him not, bringing him inwardly close to that spirit; a power that cannot be but for good; for in proportion as selfishness intrudes, the love ceases, and the power which springs therefrom dies. Yet all love will, one day, meet with its return.” -- George MacDonald, Phantastes
