BLOG TOUR: Latter-Day Warriors by Brock Lance Richardson

ABOUT THE BOOK

Discover the spiritual warrior in you! Based on the belief that every soul has a spiritual warrior within, author Brock Lance Richardson interviews ten men he met through BYU football. Each reveals what it takes to become physically and spiritually strong, while their wives describe what it means to be a “warrior” for young women. Perfect for youth and young adults, this entertaining and spiritually uplifting read will teach you how to build spiritual stamina and to use your inner warrior for good.

REVIEW
I really am a fan of inspirational books about real people.  It helps me face my own challenges and struggles when I read about other people facing their own and eventually coming off victorious.  The analogy that Richardson makes here about the young people of the LDS Church being 'warriors' is an apt one.  While most of them will not fight in a physical war (hopefully), we are all engaged in a very real spiritual war with Satan. And that is what this book is focused on.  Using examples from the scriptures, Richardson approached ten former BYU football players to illustrate the points he wants to make.  In each chapter an interview with comments is presented showing how real people can be real spiritual warriors.  I can highly recommend this book to young adults who are struggling with their lives or think they don't have what it takes to be a warrior of any kind.  This is also a great book for those who love BYU football like I do and find it fascinating to get a look into some of the people who've been a part of it.

A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF CHRISTMAS MATERIALS!

Inline image 2All About Christmas

This hard cover book is stuffed with stories, songs, poems, Christmas history, joyful traditions, recipes, and activities. This delightful book celebrates all things Christmas - from the sacred story of the Nativity to the lore of Saint Nick.

This is an amazing collection of materials, including stories, recipes and old-fashioned illustrations that made me nostalgic for the less commercialized aspects of Christmas. It reminded me of what Christmas is all about, spending time with family and remembering our Savior Jesus Christ. See here for a more thorough review.

Inline image 3Words of Christmas: Savoring the True Meaning of the Season One Word at a Time

This beautifully designed book takes a closer look at twenty-five words, like hope, faith and joy, that we hear throughout the holidays.

So much attention is paid to the Christmas holiday that I sometimes think that the most important parts get neglected. This book focuses on twenty-five words that convey most beautifully exactly what the Christmas holiday is all about. A powerful reminder of the power of words to both lighten and darken the world.

Inline image 4Christus Marble 3 inch statue

This statue is small but the reminder of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is a powerful one. This is a replica of one of my all time favorite pieces of art. I placed it next to my nativity as a symbol of what that baby in the manger grew up to be and do do. A wonderful addition to my Christmas decorations, I will cherish using this not only at Christmas but all year round.

Inline image 7A Songbook for LDS Families

A Songbook for LDS Families highlights eighteen beloved and well-known songs, as well as twenty-eight newly penned Book of Mormon hymns composed by Janice Kapp Perry with text by Bonnie Hart Murray.

Looking through this songbook brought back many happy memories of my childhood. The first section of the book contains 18 of the best known of Janice Kapp Perry's beautiful songs.  I remember loving many of these as a child and the beautiful messages and melodies contained therein.  I enjoyed reading the stories surrounding their creation.  The second half of the book contains 28 new songs based on well-known Book of Mormon stories and testimonies.  While these are unfamiliar the words are beautiful and I look forward to learning them.  The gorgeous paintings and stories connected to these songs make them all the more inspiring.

Inline image 6No Ordinary Shepherd (DVD)

The young shepard boy, has always treasured his father's tale of that starlit night filled with wonder of angelic heralds and a tiny Bethlehem stable sheltering the chosen Messiah. The young shepard later encounters a miracle of his own.

While this is not a high cost production with big name actors and on location shooting, to me what matters is the story. And the story is a sweet story of faith and healing. I also really liked the actor portraying the Savior, his gentle and kind demeanor reflects just how I think the Savior would have acted. A sweet portrayal that had me crying in the end.

Inline image 8He Knows My Name (DVD)

Rebekah is fascinated by the man her neighbors call Jesus. Her mother is not so sure. One day she brings Jesus home - a simple act that will forever change their lives.

All I can say about this one is that you need to see it.  I absolutely loved it, although it did make me cry.  I'm not sure I can even put into words what this one made me feel, all I can say is watch it!

MANY THANKS TO THE PUBLISHER FOR SENDING THESE MATERIALS WHICH HAVE ADDED GREATLY TO MY ENJOYMENT OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON!

IT'S ALL ABOUT CHRISTMAS BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY

ABOUT THE BOOK

Like heirloom ornaments on a splendid tree, It’s All About Christmas will put you and your family in a festive frame of mind for a glorious holiday season. Stuffed with stories, songs, poems, Christmas history, joyful traditions, recipes, and activities, this delightful book celebrates all things Christmas—from the sacred story of the Nativity to the lore of Saint Nick. Opening this book is like tearing the paper off a much-anticipated gift, offering new surprises with each turn of the page. Generously illustrated with scores of vibrant vintage images, It’s All About Christmas will remind you of Christmases past, help you appreciate Christmas present, and guide you to creating memories for the Christmases to come.

REVIEW

It's All About Christmas carries with it a nostalgic feel that reminds me of Christmas's past.  The collection of short stories, recipes, songs, poems, and classic pictures and paintings offers up reminders of the joys of Christmas.  I recognized many of the songs and stories but found it wonderful to have them all collected here in one place.  The stories include "The Gift of the Magi", "The Little Match Girl", and "The Animals Christmas Tree."  Each song includes the lyrics and a bit about the history of the song.  The recipes sound delicious.  This book is a great resource for those, like myself, who enjoy putting together a Christmas Eve program (a collection of scriptures telling the story of the birth of Jesus is the first selection in the book).  While it would have been helpful to have the actual music included with the songs, that's a minor thing since these songs would be easy to find elsewhere.

LDS MEMOIR: He Delivered Even Me, He Will Deliver Even You by Misti Stevenson

ABOUT THE BOOK

Growing up, Misti thought she had a pretty normal childhood. Right up until the sixth grade. That's when she began to notice things. Like how she was constantly aware of every blink of her eyes. How any normal physical thing could become an enemy that her brain would replay over and over again. She tried talking to her parents about it, but family dysfunction and parental control issues wouldn't let them see her problem for what it was. So she did everything she could to hide it. It would take her many more years to attach a name to her tortuous condition — Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

But after many more years of struggling, praying, and counseling, Misti experienced the miracle she had been seeking — she was healed.

So she's done hiding. This is her story of suffering through — and eventually being healed of — OCD, anxiety, and depression through the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. This is her story of how the Lord turned her deepest struggles into her greatest blessings.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Misti Stevenson now enjoys her busy and joy-filled life in Kaysville with her husband, Jed, and five busy children. When not helping her kids with homework, tackling a mountain of laundry, or serving at church, she loves to do yoga, go jogging with her friends, and especially loves hiking in the beautiful Wasatch Mountains with her family. Facing her OCD was difficult. Telling her family was almost impossible. Writing about it, the supreme act of faith. She has felt supported by the Savior each step of the way. Misti knows you or someone you love may be among those who are silently suffering in a seemingly insurmountable set of circumstances and loves spreading the Savior’s message of hope and deliverance through the message of her book.

REVIEW

Mental illness has long carried a stigma with it that is sadly still alive and well.  Even now people are uncomfortable talking about it and understanding it is difficult under any circumstances.  And that is why stories like Misti's need to be told.  Misti gives an account of her experiences starting from a very young age that lead her down the road to developing OCD as well as how she dealt with it and how she eventually found healing through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. I found myself truly touched as I read about Misti's struggles, especially feeling so alone in her struggles.  But like most of us she had her good days too and people who loved her deeply.  I'd recommend this book to those who've struggled with not only OCD but any kind of mental illness and the immense challenges it presents.  Misti offers hope to those who struggle, that healing is possible when faith in the Lord is exercised and a support network found, including appropriate medical care.

Keep in mind that this is uniquely Misti's story, experiences related to mental illness differ greatly person to person.  Appropriate medical care and support from family and friends are vital to anyone suffering from any sort of mental disorder or disease, genetic or not.  But as Misti points out, each person's journey is his or her own.

NOVELLA REVIEW: Heir to Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson

Source: publisher for review

ABOUT THE BOOK

Philip Wyndham has never envied his older brother for being the heir to Edenbrooke. He would much rather carve out his own destiny than live under the constraints of that position. But when his older brother dies unexpectedly, Philip's life is turned upside down as duty requires him to give up the life he planned. Philip takes on his new role as the most sought-after bachelor in London with alternating reluctance, boredom, and resentment. But all that changes the night fate leads him to an inn, where he meets the incomparable Marianne Daventry.

REVIEW

I was so excited when I heard about this book.  Having absolutely loved Donaldson's Edenbrooke, I was thrilled to be able to read some more about Philip.  And I was not disappointed.  Though there were a couple of small discrepancies between this novella and the full length novel, I found them minor since the main reason I wanted to read the book was to see Marianne and Philip's meeting from Philip's perspective.  And that part I found absolutely delightful, more than making up for any small errors. I pretty much smiled the whole time I was reading the last part of the story and matching it up with Marianne's version of events.  I couldn't help but laugh at some moments.  I have to say that this scene is one of my all time favorite book scenes ever.  And I fell a bit more in love with Philip.  He is probably my all time favorite book hero, although maybe it's a tie with Mr. Darcy, hmmm, I'll have to ponder that some more. ;)

CLEAN ROMANCE: Seaside Gifts by Gayle Roper

ABOUT THE BOOK

Nan Patterson has finally found her niche: operating a boardwalk gift shop in the quaint beachfront town of Seaside. Everything is perfect–until valuable items start just…showing up. At worst, they’ve been stolen and abandoned in her shop. At best, someone doesn’t realize they’ve lost them. Either way, Nan knows she’s out of her depth. Time to call in the local police.

Officer Rog Eastman has bigger worries than a bunch of misplaced treasures—but it is his job to help local shop owners. The fact that she’s adorable doesn’t even come into the equation. Especially since he’s sworn off women for the foreseeable future.

But there’s an imp at work in the background. Someone who knows exactly what these two people need: each other!

REVIEW

Nan Patterson loves her new home, Seaside, New Jersey, where she runs the gift shop left her by her Aunt Char.  But when someone starts leaving gifts for her in the shop she is confused and concerned.  After calling the police, Rog Eastman shows up, incredulity and all.  But Nan is a cute, pixie of a young woman and Rog decides to help her.  But things take a turn when the guilty party doesn't reveal him/herself the way he/she promised Rog he/she would, leaving Nan feeling hurt and betrayed.  And while Nan and Rog are attracted to each other they have both faced heartbreak before and are unwilling to do so again.  But the heart wants what the heart wants.  Can they find their way past the hurt from the past and the confusion of the present?  I admit, I like this kind of sweet romance.  This one is less cheesy than most since the relationship moves along at a realistic sort of pace and they aren't married with three children by the end.  And the challenges to the relationship feel appropriate for the situation.  A sweet, cute romance for those who like me enjoy that sort of thing.  This is a christian romance so there are references to God and his plan as well as prayer and scriptures.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: By the River by Jennie Hansen

ABOUT THE BOOK

It was supposed to be a relaxing early morning run, but the path along the river trail quickly turns into the scene of a nightmare for recent college graduate Kira Paxton. An unintended exploration of a secluded riverbank leads to a gruesome discovery that sets her on a collision course with danger: it is the body of a young woman. As Ford and Kira bond over their shared ordeal, they work together to prove Ford’s innocence—and soon, their attraction is undeniable. But it seems that Kira’s nightmare is far from over. What begins as a series of close calls and acts of vandalism soon escalates, putting Kira’s own life in jeopardy. It appears that Kira saw something that day along the trail, something that has made her a target. With Ford’s help, she is determined to track down the killer—before she becomes the next victim.

REVIEW

After finding the dead body of a teenage girl, Kira can't help but be curious about what lead up to the girl's death.  Especially once she meet's Ford, one of the girl's teachers.  When Ford is considering to be a person of interest in the death because of his conflicts with the girl, Kira is determined to help him.  But things turn nasty when Kira becomes a target herself.  Jennie Hansen has done a great job creating interesting characters and an interesting plot.  The twists and turns involving lies and troubled teenagers were sad but all to realistic.  An enjoyable read.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: One Last Spring by Sian Ann Bessey

ABOUT THE BOOK

Wales, 1884

The quiet village of Llanwddyn has long been a safe haven for Gwen, a young Welsh country girl whose life has been fraught with tragedy. Following the untimely death of her parents, it was her aunt’s home in Llanwddyn that provided Gwen and her brother a refuge from their grief. Now, with the unwelcome news that the village is to be razed in the name of progress, an inescapable wave of change has begun.

When her brother departs to follow his dream of sailing the high seas, Gwen is left alone to navigate the shifting world around her. She soon finds herself relying on the support of her brother’s best friend, Lewis, a gentle blacksmith whose kindness stirs her heart. Resigned to the fact that Lewis may never see her as more than a child, Gwen is soon swept off her feet by Thomas, a prosperous young Englishman. Torn between two men and two very different paths, Gwen has little time to determine what course her heart will follow. With time running out for her beautiful valley, will love come too late?

REVIEW

Bessey has written a tender story of love and life.  Gwen loves her village and those who live in it and isn't happy about all the changes taking place, including the fact that soon her village will be buried underneath a dam.  Her brother's leaving to go to see doesn't help any.  But Gwen is a determined person and she deals with these challenges as she did the death of her parents.  But love steps in and leaves her confused about what she wants and who she wants.  I loved the details about Wales and it's people, it makes me want to go there to see the places Bessey describes.  I also quickly fell in love with Gwen and Lewis.  Thomas was great as well, which made the love triangle more difficult to read about because I knew someone wasn't going to get what he wanted.  But I think things turned out for the best based on the character's desires.

COZY MYSTERY: Writing All Wrongs by Ellery Adams

ABOUT THE BOOK

The New York Times bestselling author of Lethal Lettersreturns to the North Carolina Coast, where aspiring novelist and amateur sleuth Olivia Limoges discovers crime doesn’t take a vacation . . .

After Olivia and Chief Rawlings enjoy a brief honeymoon on Palmetto Island, they’re joined by the rest of the Bayside Book Writers for the Coastal Carolina Crime Festival. The festival’s highlight is Silas Black, celebrity screenwriter and television producer, who is currently working on a popular television show in North Carolina.

As the festival gets under way, a trickster seems to be bringing famous local ghost stories to life. But when the body of a woman close to Black is found on the beach, Olivia and her friends must deduce who on the island could resort to murder—before the sands of time run out for someone else…

REVIEW

I have enjoyed Ellery Adams's Books by the Bay series.  This newest entry in the series revolves around Olivia and her new husband, Chief Rawlings attending the Coastal Carolina Crime Festival while enjoying a bit of a honeymoon.  And the rest of the Bayside Book Writers join them to enjoy the sites and celebration of Silas Black and his pirate TV show.  But things take a nasty turn when scenes from local ghost stories start appearing and Black's girlfriend is found murdered.  Olivia and her friends end up right in the middle of everything and Olivia can't rest until she finds the killer, especially once her recently discovered father gets involved.

I love both the mysteries and the characters of Adam's series.  That's why I've kept reading the series despite some content I'm not completely comfortable with (a bit of profanity, drinking, and some premarital sex).  The only uncomfortable content in this book is some profanity since Olivia and the chief are now married.  But I have enjoyed reading about how Olivia makes friends, works on writing her book, and running her restaurants while dealing with a complicated family history.  The books are well-written and the characters thoroughly engaging.

BLOG TOUR w/ GIVEAWAY: Puzzle Pieces by Betsy Brannon Green

ABOUT THE BOOK

Presley DeGraff is a young woman on the run. With nothing but the clothes on her back, her escape from the ruthless manipulations of her former fiancé leaves her with little time to hide. There is only one person to whom she can turn, only one place she may be safe . . .

Haggerty, Georgia, is known for its Southern hospitality and quirky inhabitants. For Presley, her Aunt Violet’s home in the tiny town is a lifesaving haven. Her aunt, along with a cast of delightful friends and neighbors, warmly welcomes her. For the first time in so long, she feels hope—a hope that hinges on hiding her past. But the dreams of solitude that she had envisioned quickly fade when a disturbing discovery is made in her aunt’s backyard: a human skeleton. At the first hint of crime, Haggerty’s own amateur sleuth, Miss Eugenia, is on the case. Along with handsome Haggerty resident Mac and sprightly ninety-nine-year-old Loralee, Presley is quickly drawn into a mystery spanning generations of Haggerty’s history. But when news coverage of the investigation digs up Presley’s own secrets, it’s up to her new friends to come to her aid, by whatever means necessary.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Betsy Brannon Green currently lives in Bessemer, Alabama, which is a suburb of Birmingham. She has been married to her husband, Butch, for thirty-two wonderful years, and they have eight children, one daughter-in-law, three sons-in-law, and eight grandchildren. She is a Sunday School teacher in the Bessemer Ward and works for Hueytown Elementary School. She loves to read, when she can find the time, and watch sporting events—especially if they involve her children. Although born in Salt Lake City, Betsy has spent most of her life in the South. Her writing and her life have been strongly influenced by the town of Headland, Alabama, and the many generous gracious people who live there.

REVIEW

I was thrilled to be able to visit Haggerty once again as Betsy Brannon Green returns to the southern town in her latest romantic suspense novel.  This time the characters included not only Miss Eugenia and her friends, but Presley DeGraff, a young lady on the run from her past and a manipulative former fiance.  She is hoping to find a place to recover and get herself together when she comes to town to stay with her Aunt Violet.  But the discovery of an old human skeleton in her aunt's backyard complicates everything and Presley can't resist trying to find the answers.  Unfortunately, Presley's involvement endangers her when word of her whereabouts is revealed. I always enjoy reading about the same characters over and over, especially fiesty Miss Eugenia.  Combine great characters, an intriguing mystery, and a bit of romance and I'm completely won over.

Stealing Adda by Tamara Leigh

WRITER’S BLOCK, NIBBLED NAILS, PLAGIARISM, OH MY! AND DID I MENTION ROMANCE? Life for Adda Sinclaire, New York Times best-selling author and historical romance writer extraordinaire, reads more like a country song than a breathless, bodice-bursting affair. For starters, she has no romance in her own life. That might have something to do with the fact that her husband—correction, ex-husband—ran off with Stick Woman, whom everyone knew would never be more than a mid-list author anyway. To add insult to injury (and another verse to the country song), her ex not only took their dog but gave it to Stick Woman. If that isn't enough, Adda has come down with a horrible case of writer's block, finds herself gifted with a Bible that is determined to speak to her, and is the unwitting target of a romance cover model's misdirected advances. Just when she catches her breath—and quite possibly the eye of a certain fabulously good-looking man (ahem…her new editor)—her arch-nemesis gives the pot one final stir.

Spy by Night by Jordan McCollum

After watching her parents’ marriage crash and burn, CIA operative Talia Reynolds doesn’t believe in “happily ever afters.” Besides, her job entails eighty-hour weeks, juggling a dozen covers and disguises, and tracking down a dangerous Russian spy ring. She hardly has time for romantic entanglements, even if she could let her guard down enough to get close to anyone. But all the rules she lives by could be broken when she meets aerospace engineer Danny Fluker.

Danny moved to Canada for a great job — and a chance to start over after a bad breakup. Dating definitely isn’t in his plans . . . until beautiful and enigmatic Talia throws a perfect storm right in his flight path. When he catches a glimpse of the real woman behind her façade, he has to get to know her better.

Talia has to find a Russian spymaster before he figures out she’s not who she claims, and failing to keep her two lives separate in the process could mean the death of more than just her budding relationship. Danny has to decide if a future with Talia — and facing the past — is worth the risk of getting hurt again. If they can break through the barriers keeping them apart (and avoid a major international catastrophe), they just might have a chance at being happy together.

Saving Grace by Michele Paige Holmes

From #2 Amazon Bestselling Historical Romance Author and Whitney Award Winner, Michele Paige Holmes, comes SAVING GRACE, a regency romance from the Hearthfire Romance series:

After the death of her grandfather, the Duke of Salisbury, Grace Thatcher wants nothing more than to live quietly in the country with her younger siblings. Her father’s debts thwart those plans, and to protect her sister, Helen, Grace must marry a man of her father’s choosing.

As each suitor proves less than desirable, Grace comes up with clever schemes, causing each to reject her. While staying at the mysterious Sutherland Hall, a middle-of-the-night mishap sends Grace into the arms of a stranger, Nicholas Sutherland—and provides inspiration for her grandest plan yet—one that will leave her reputation in tatters yet free both her and Helen from all possibility of marriage.

Too late Grace regrets her rash actions when her father’s last choice, Mr. Samuel Preston, proves to be a gentleman and a friend. But Samuel is the sworn enemy of Nicholas Sutherland, the man responsible for her “ruin.” Now instead of being free, Grace is caught between two men—each with his own agenda.

Can life really turn on a dime, a missed bus—or a stuck pastry shop door?

Chloe Dillard's life has always been complicated. Her mother is a neurotic romance novelist and her boyfriend, Mathew, has been pressuring her to go "all the way".
But after The Worst Night of Her Life, Chloe escapes on her Senior Class trip to the swoon-worthy city of Paris which takes her mind off her troubles—temporarily. On the final leg of her dream trip, Chloe squeezes in one final run for a last-minute box of decadent pastries. Add a broken shop door, subtract a broken four-inch heel from her cute strappy sandals, and Chloe ends up one stuck girl on the bakery shop floor with a sprained ankle.
Rescued by the shop owner’s dreamy son with chocolate-syrup eyes, the beautiful city of Paris suddenly becomes Chloe’s personal secret adventure. And even though Jean-Paul, the oh-so-kind La Patisserie shop boy is the gentlemanly guy Chloe has always dreamed of, even he has a girlfriend.

The police are tracking her down as a run-away, Mom’s having a nervous breakdown over her daughter’s “disappearance”, and Chloe’s just trying to have a Happily-Ever-After even as her dreams with Matt are swirling down the drain.

What’s a girl to do in the most romantic city in the world?
